clomid-birth-defectsMany women use fertility drugs in order to encourage conception. However, some women who have used the fertility drug Clomid have allegedly given birth to babies with birth defects.

Clomid birth defects have prompted many families to consider filing lawsuits against the drug manufacturer for failing to warn them about the risks associated with Clomid use.

Clomid Birth Defect Study

These Clomid birth defects allegations follow data that was examined by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC found that women who use Clomid to treat infertility may have a significantly higher risk of giving birth to a child with a Clomid birth defect. One study suggested that some women may be 300 percent more likely to experience birth defects if using the medication incorrectly.

The CDC examined data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study in order to identify the connection between Clomid fertility drug use and birth defects. While the exact risk is unknown, it was found that there were higher numbers of birth defects among Clomid users than non-Clomid users.

It is unknown if these alleged Clomid birth defect cases were caused by the infertility treatment or if there was an underlying condition (perhaps related to the infertility itself) that caused the birth defects. It was also suggested that the number of women who used Clomid in the data was insufficient to prove a definitive cause.

Clomid Birth Defects

Clomid may be a useful tool in treating infertility; however, the timing is incredibly important. The fertility drug should be used at such a time that it stimulates ovulation but has no effect upon the fetus. If the drug is used at an improper time, the risk of Clomid birth defects can dramatically increase.

Many individuals may not be aware of the risks with taking Clomid fertility drugs, but many birth defects have followed Clomid use. Mothers who have used Clomid have given birth to children who had serious birth defects such as the following:

  • Anencephaly (baby born without parts of brain and skull)
  • Coarctation of the aorta (narrowing of the aorta)
  • Craniosyntosis (premature fusion of an infant’s skull sutures)
  • Esophageal atresia (baby born without part of the esophagus)
  • Omphalocele (baby’s abdominal organs are outside of the body)
  • Septal heart defect (hole in the wall of the heart)

These birth defects may be extremely dangerous for the child and may be costly for the parents to treat (both in hospital visits or potentially the cost of future living or education).

Clomid birth defect lawsuits may be filed against the drug maker in order to win compensation for medical treatment as well as for the pain and suffering caused by the lack of adequate warnings concerning Clomid birth defects.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
