ClomidClomid is a popular fertility drug that has been linked to a number of alarming and life-threatening birth defects.

While the fertility treatment has proven to be a successful treatment option for women trying to conceive a child, several studies, including a 2010 study by the CDC, link Clomid to birth defects in babies born to mothers who took the drug before or during pregnancy.

Clomid Birth Defect Studies

A recent study conducted by the CDC found a significant correlation between Clomid and at least nine different types of life-threatening birth defects. The research, which was published in the online journal Human Reproduction, involved women who took Clomid in the two months leading up to conception and the first trimester of pregnancy.

Another Clomid birth defects study conducted in 2003 found that expecting mothers who took Clomid had 10 times the risk of giving birth to a child with spina bifida, an extremely severe congenital abnormality that causes the backbone and spinal column fail to close before birth.

Additionally, in 2010, the Harvard School of Public Health found that fertility medications like Clomid nearly doubled the risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in children whose mothers took the fertility drug during pregnancy. Making matters worse, a 2006 birth defects study reported an incredible 508% increased risk of hypospadias (irregularly placed or missing urethra) in sons of Clomid users.

One more Clomid birth defects study conducted on 2,339 women who had taken the fertility treatment before or during pregnancy found that nearly 2.5% of cases suffered from birth defects and reproductive complications including stillbirth and spontaneous abortion.

These findings are particularly devastating to the women and their families who had struggled to become pregnant only to find that the fertility drug they were given caused their baby’s birth defect.

Clomid Birth Defects

Common birth defects identified by these medical studies include:

  • Anencephaly (open cranium with the absence of a brain)
  • Esophageal atresia (closed esophagus)
  • Omphalocele (protrusion of part of the intestine through the abdominal wall)
  • Craniosynostosis (premature fusion of the skull bones)
  • Three different types of congenital heart defects
  • Dandy Walker malformation (defect of the brain)
  • Cloacal extrophy (involves multiple abnormalities of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts)
  • Down’s Syndrome
  • Club foot
  • Cleft lip and/or cleft palates
  • Undescended testes in males
  • Blindness
  • Hernia
  • Malformations

Recently, the FDA assigned Clomiphene (Clomid) as a Category X, which is the highest level of pregnancy risk that can be assigned to a drug. This is a clear indication that Clomiphene should not be used during pregnancy.

Clomid Birth Defect Lawsuits

On the heels of these numerous scientific studies that link Clomid to serious birth defects, a number of families have opted to pursue Clomid birth defect lawsuits to compensate them for such damages as medical bills, prescription costs, lost wages, pain, and suffering.

If you took Clomid before or during pregnancy and gave birth to a child with a serious birth defect, you may be entitled to substantial compensation in a Clomid birth defect lawsuit.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
