The Stryker Rejuvenate hip replacement device is one of a number of hip replacement models that has been linked to problems resulting from its metal-on-metal design.
While metal-on-metal hip designs were intended to be more strong than their counterparts made from other materials, the very design of the Stryker Rejuvenate and similar models have been the cause of serious health problems that have led to a great deal of litigation being filed against metal hip manufacturers.
Stryker Rejuvenate Metal-on-Metal Design
The Stryker Rejuvenate hip replacement and other metal hip implants that lead to serious problems are designed in a way that allows metal parts of the hip implant to touch during normal activities.
With other metal hip designs, there is a liner that prevents the metal parts from touching. This liner may be made of ceramic or a type of polyethylene. This ensures the metal pieces do not touch, and with these implants, the problems experienced by patients with these types of implants do not reflect the problems that happen in the metal-on-metal designs.
In the metal-on-metal hip implant design like that of the Stryker Rejuvenate hip replacement, when the metal parts interact during movement, metal particles flake off and enter surrounding tissue as well as the bloodstream of the patient.
As the metal particles enter the nearby tissue, a localized immune response causes the tissue to become inflamed, and sometimes the tissue suffers from necrosis, or death. This can cause the tissue that should have been supporting the device to weaken, and the hip implant device can loosen or move out of place.
These metal particles can also cause pseudotumors to form in the areas near the hip implant, and bone fractures, hip dislocation and hip implant failure may also occur.
When the metal ions enter the bloodstream, they can cause systemic issues in the body. Metallosis, or metal poisoning, can cause organ damage and endocrine disruption that can have body-wide consequences.
Degenerative heart disease and cancer are also a possibility that results from the body being exposed to metal ions from the Stryker Rejuvenate and other metal-on-metal hip implant devices.
