While Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a rare condition, there is an increasing concern about its risk. It also occurs all over the world. For example, a young man from Taiwan was diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome after having a bad reaction to a medication.
For Johnny Tai, struggling was something he had to endure his entire life. He had been diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome when he was only three years old, which left him fully blind and partially deaf. He had been bullied by his peers due to his small size and disfigured appearance because of the damage caused by the condition.
To help him cope, his parents enrolled him in martial arts when he was eight, believing it would be a good way to raise his self-esteem and provide him a means of self-defense.
By the time he was a teenager, he had become so adapt to the practice that he enlisted himself for a nine-month long boot camp for kids hosted by the Taiwanese army.
Throughout his childhood, Tai had felt insecure and limited due to his condition. Before beginning martial arts he was worried that he would be forever discriminated throughout his life. However after martial arts, Tai had gained the confidence to try other sports, and soon earned the respect from his peers after proving himself in different events.
Tai asserts that winning over his peers had not been through his proficiency in sports, but was when he showed them that he was no different than them despite his condition.
Currently, he is teaching martial arts at Richmond Martial Arts, and started teaching students who also suffered blindness, and is encouraging the blind to explore martial arts. His goal is the compete against other martial artists in the self-defense category of the Tiger Balm Internationals in North Vancouver, in hopes of opening up the opportunity to people in similar situations.
Tai’s study is an inspirational and happy ending to a harrowing tale of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Tai’s story can serve as an inspiration to other Stevens Johnson Syndrome survivors, as well as show that it is possible to recover from the condition if caught in time.
Unfortunately, most patients who suffer the condition do not make such recoveries, and are often impaired for the rest of their lives. These victims may qualify for compensation from drug companies through an SJS lawsuit or SJS class action lawsuit.
Overview of Stevens Johnson Syndrome Complications
Stevens Johnson Syndrome is an extreme allergic skin reaction, which is caused by one or more medications.
It is currently unknown as to why only some patients develop Stevens Johnson Syndrome, but most medical experts believe it has to do with medical history. They also believe the chances are higher if certain medications are used in conjunction with each other.
This condition has been a medical concern for the last decade, and is a frightening experience to patients due to how severe the symptoms are. Typically, if Stevens Johnson Syndrome were to occur, it would be within the first two weeks of starting the medication, and would start with flu-like symptoms.
There are approximately 300 cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome diagnosed in the United States a year, and is more commonly found in adults than children.
If left untreated, the condition could cause permanent damage to the skin, sight, internal organs, and even death. Due to the nature of the lesions that appear on the skin, especially with the detachment process, Stevens Johnson Syndrome patients are treated in the same unit as burn patients.
With such extreme side effects, it is important for pharmaceutical companies to include Stevens Johnson Syndrome on the drug’s label if it has been reported, several Steven Johnson Syndrome class action lawsuits claim. It is for this reason that so many Steven-Johnson Syndrome lawsuits have been filed.
In general, SJS lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.

It is really weird, and somewhat disturbing, to find an article on the net that talks, for most of its length, about me- and yet it’s an article I never knew existed in any form lol.
Not that I am against the post in any way- in fact I think it is a very nice article, but it’d be nice if I was consulted on the various facts before it was published.
“disfigured appearance” —- I rather resent that :)
