Stevens Johnson syndrome SJS toxic epidermal necrolysis TENStevens Johnson syndrome is one of the possible dangerous or even fatal side effects of Avelox.

Those who do recover from SJS Avelox may be left with severe and permanent injuries or scarring.

Avelox Background

Avelox (also known by its generic name, moxifloxacin) is a synthetic antibiotic medication. It’s one of a group of such drugs known as fluoroquinolones.

This class of antibiotics has had several generations created over the years, and Avelox belongs to the fourth fluoroquinolone generation. These fluoroquinolone drugs were created in the hope that patients would experience fewer side effects than with other, non-synthetic medications.

Despite the hope that synthetic antibiotics would lead to fewer side effects, patients have reported many side effects of Avelox as with non-synthetic drugs.

Any medication comes with a variety of possible complications, and this is to be expected. For the most part, Avelox is no different. The synthetic antibiotic comes with a number of minor side effects that may go away on their own without further treatment.

However, one of the major and even fatal side effects of Avelox is Stevens Johnson syndrome, a condition that starts with a “severe skin rash.” Because it can begin as a mild skin rash, Stevens Johnson syndrome can first seem like just a mild side effect. But this rash can quickly develop into a much more severe, painful, and life-threatening condition.

SJS Side Effects of Avelox

Stevens Johnson syndrome is a life-threatening skin condition that can be caused by taking Avelox or other drugs. Symptoms of this disease should be considered a medical emergency.

Avelox Stevens Johnson syndrome is essentially an allergic reaction to moxifloxacin, but can become so severe the symptoms resemble burns. Avelox Stevens Johnson syndrome is often treated in a hospital’s burn unit due to these similarities.

At first, Avelox SJS symptoms may be similar to those of the flu. Patients who have SJS report chills, body aches, and fevers, which by themselves are not altogether concerning.

However, it is important to be highly aware of these symptoms, because if they lead to SJS, the condition can be fatal. If the condition does progress, a purple or red rash spreads quickly across the skin, blistering and letting the top layer of skin die and shed off.

Avelox Stevens Johnson syndrome rashes are painful, and can cover up to 30 percent of the body. If more than 30 percent of the body is covered in these rashes, the condition is referred to as toxic epidermal necrolysis, or TEN.

TEN is simply a more severe and dangerous form of SJS, and comes with a greater risk of fatality. While the SJS mortality rate is at 15 percent, the rate of fatalities in TEN cases is 40 percent.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome Lawsuits

Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits accuse drug manufacturers of downplaying the severity of drug side effects, including Stevens Johnson syndrome. Plaintiffs claim that, had they been adequately warned of the dangers surrounding these drugs, they would have chosen a safer alternative.

If you have experienced Stevens Johnson syndrome or other serious side effects of Avelox, you should seek medical help immediately.

If you or someone you know has experienced these symptoms or has been diagnosed with Avelox Stevens Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis after taking Avelox or a similar drug, you may have reason to file an Avelox Stevens Johnson syndrome lawsuit.
