Spectrum Cable class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Plaintiff Richard Wookey filed a class action lawsuit against Charter Communications (DE) Inc., doing business as Spectrum Cable, and Charter Communications Operating LLC, doing business as Spectrum.
- Why: Wookey claims Spectrum Cable overcharges customers with deceptive fees.
- Where: The Spectrum class action lawsuit was filed in Kentucky federal court.
A new class action lawsuit alleges Charter Communications overcharges Spectrum Cable customers with a deceptive “Broadcast TV Surcharge” fee.
Plaintiff Richard Wookey claims Charter, which does business as Spectrum Cable, uses the Broadcast TV Surcharge fee to “secretly” increase the monthly rate of its cable TV service plans.
Wookey argues that the Broadcast TV Surcharge fee is “deceptively named” to make it appear as if it is a government-related fee or tax when it is actually a “disguised” price increase.
“Charter has made this fee appear to be a legitimate government-related fee when, in fact, it is simply a way for Charter to advertise and promise lower rates than it actually charges,” the Spectrum class action lawsuit states.
Wookey wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who paid Charter’s Broadcast TV Surcharge fee during the maximum limitation period.
The plaintiff accuses Charter of breach of contract, unjust enrichment and violating Kentucky’s Consumer Protection Act, among other things, and demands a jury trial.
Charter ‘deceptively’ advertises Spectrum service at lower monthly rates, class action claims
Wookey claims Charter “deceptively” advertises its Spectrum cable TV service plans as having a lower monthly rate than what it actually charges.
“Charter’s advertisements and contracts do not clearly and conspicuously disclose the true price of its services, instead concealing the Broadcast TV Surcharge fee in the fine print,” the Spectrum class action lawsuit says.
Wookey argues Charter’s alleged practice of charging a deceptive fee has caused him and other consumers to pay “substantially more” for Spectrum cable TV service than what they were led to believe it would cost.
“Charter’s deceptive fee practices have caused substantial harm to consumers like Plaintiff, who have been misled about the true cost of their cable TV service,” the Spectrum class action lawsuit claims.
In other entertainment news, Disney has agreed to a class action settlement that accused the company of driving up streaming costs by forcing its expensive ESPN sports channel onto streaming platforms.

My bill has tripled since I got with spectrum 😡
if we’re building the case about spectrum continuously using deceiving sales tactics, overcharging and randomly changing the prices of services at their will. regardless of the contract you signed then count me!
My wife and i have spectrum mobil and Internet and they have this autopay and the problem with that is you have to give your card info so they can take money it seems whenever they want if our phone bill is do I unlock my card and pay it and lock my card back up it’s always locked well thay want to take my Internet payment too even if it’s not due yet and with our phones we pay the insurance but I’ve got a broken phone and I can’t get a replacement cause the phone isn’t like new a thousand dollar phone have payed for more than half for and I can’t use and they won’t replace that’s got to be insurance fraud or something….
Prices go up every 6 months when you are supposed to be locked in
I wish the lawsuit was in minneosta, my gf’s spectrum bill was $60 at first and now they’ve recently tried bumping it up to $94 . We need help .
I was bullied into remaining a customer of Spectrum. They also were adding random charges to our internet bill. It was supposed to be $54 monthly, that was what I was told, turns out they lied and I ended up having to pay $98.
Our internet bill is only supposed to be $60 a month and we are charged $80 every month. We are also supposed to be getting high speed internet but it’s constantly glitching or going out. When they have outages which is ALL the time, we do not get reimbursed for how long it was out.
Spectrum would not let me cancel my service. I called to cancel because I wos moving, at that time my bill was due in about 1 week, they wouldn’t let me cancel until that was paid. I have never seen a company not let you cancel service deliberately so another month could be added, that is unethical

We also have Spectrum or Charter have been a customer with them for 11 years prior to that we dropped them and switch to Dish Network and then we went back to Charter because Dish Network was just unreliable service Charter has over the years continuously raise their prices for different things and including the broadcast surcharge we have 15 channels that we watch with them and internet and I pay $127.22 a month for that we don’t have any other packages or premium channels that we watched from them or anything plus we have cell phones with them because if we had their service we could get the cell phone cheaper but that’s not included in the $127.22 bill per month the phones are a separate bill and I’ve called because we’ve had lots of issues with service I’ve called and complained over the years and they will give you a discount for a short-term but that’s it then your package goes back up in price I too would like some of my money back that I paid for this unnecessary stuff. Where we live our internet choices are very limited we have a choice between Spectrum and Frontier and Frontier is not reliable at all for service in this area we know people that have them that have had nothing but problems with them so basically Spectrum has the Monopoly and they utilize it to their best interest
