ER-seizure-stroke-onfiStevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) are two serious skin conditions that have been suggested to be Onfi side effects.

Onfi (clobazam) is an anti-seizure medication that treats Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a form of epilepsy. Many Onfi users have claimed the medication caused them to experience severe TEN and SJS side effects. An Onfi SJS class action lawsuit investigation is currently underway.

SJS is almost always a reaction to a drug. SJS begins with flu-like symptoms, which can cause the condition to be initially misdiagnosed. A red or purplish rash will follow and develop into painful blisters. The blistering may become so severe that the skin peels off, leaving the body exposed to infections, sepsis, or even death.

SJS requires immediate hospitalization and can affect up to 30 percent of the skin or mucous membranes. If SJS affects the eyes, a patient may become permanently blind. Other permanent damage may include scarring both on the skin or internal organs. Roughly one out 20 SJS cases are fatal.

When the blistering covers more than 30 percent of the body, the condition has progressed to Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. TEN is considerably more dangerous than SJS. TEN patients may lose large patches of skin.

TEN can cause large areas of skin to die and fall off in sheets. This leaves potentially massive wounds behind. TEN patients are often treated in a hospital’s burn ward because TEN often resembles fire burns. The exposed skin can lead to dehydration, severe pain, secondary infections, sepsis, and death. The TEN mortality rate is significantly higher than SJS: about 40 percent of TEN cases are fatal.

Both SJS and TEN are relatively rare conditions. But due to the severity of the condition, the medical community has taken a great interest in what drugs can cause these potentially deadly diseases.

Onfi SJS is especially worrisome because Onfi is used to treat a condition that is typically discovered in early childhood, thus putting a younger population at risk of SJS side effects.

Onfi SJS Lawsuits

Onfi SJS lawsuits have accused Lundbeck LLC of failing to warn users about potential SJS side effects. Other allegations include negligence and product liability. Lundbeck is one of many drug manufacturers that is under investigation for allegedly causing patients severe TEN or SJS side effects.

Families of loved ones who have died from Onfi SJS may file a wrongful death lawsuit against Lundbeck.

Plaintiffs may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering, medical costs, loss of future income, loss of consortium and other costly issues related to Onfi SJS.
