Saputo Cheese USA has initiated a recall of certain Great Value cottage cheese products due to concerns over incomplete pasteurization.

The products, distributed to Walmart stores and distribution centers across 24 states, may pose health risks if consumed, particularly to vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

The recalled products, sold in white plastic tubs, include Fat Free (0% milkfat), Lowfat (2% milkfat) and Small Curd (4% milkfat) varieties across 16 oz., 24 oz. and 3 lb. containers.

These items, such as the 24 oz. Fat Free container with UPC 078742373393, feature “Best If Used By” dates ranging from April 1 to April 3, 2026.

The recall notice specifically affects inventory distributed in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20, 2026.

Warning signs prompted Great Value recall action

The notice highlights that the issue was identified during routine checks and has since been addressed. “The issue was discovered during pasteurizer troubleshooting exercises,” according to the recall.

The impacted pasteurizer has been returned to normal operation, verified and sealed by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. No other products from the facility are affected by this Great Value recall.

Consumers who have purchased the affected Great Value cottage cheese products are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should dispose of the products or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Saputo is actively working to rectify the situation by ensuring all equipment is functioning correctly and adhering to regulatory standards.

For more information about the Great Value recall, consumers can contact Saputo at 1-888-587-2423, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

Saputo says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Currently, Walmart is facing a class action lawsuit alleging it falsely advertises its Great Value brand Macaroni & Cheese as being made with real cheddar cheese when it allegedly contains fillers.
