Samsung ranges lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Matthew Unger filed a class action lawsuit against Samsung Electronics America Inc.
  • Why: Unger claims that Samsung manufactured more than 1 million ranges with defective knobs that can be turned on accidentally, posing a potential fire hazard.
  • Where: The Samsung class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

A new Samsung class action lawsuit claims the company sold ranges with front-mounted heat control knobs that can be turned on accidentally, posing a potential fire hazard.

More than 1.1 million Samsung ranges were recalled on Aug. 8. The Samsung class action lawsuit says there have been more than 300 reports of accidental activation, most of which caused fires. Seven fires allegedly involved pet deaths.

A list of the recalled ranges is available here.

Plaintiff says he was not notified about defective Samsung ranges

Plaintiff Matthew Unger says he purchased one of the recalled Samsung ranges in 2017, not realizing it had a potentially dangerous design defect. He says he was not notified about the recall or defect, instead learning about the issue on social media.

He says manufacturers have a duty to ensure their products function properly and are free of defects. If a manufacturer discovers a defect, he says it must disclose the defect or stop selling the product.ย

Unger claims Samsung has sold the defective ranges since May 2013. Due to the defect, he says he is burdened with a range that is worth less than he paid for it because it has a known and dangerous defect.

The Samsung ranges recall encourages consumers to contact the company to receive a free set of knob locks or covers compatible with their range. Until these safety measures are in place, Samsung urges consumers to keep children and pets away from the knobs, avoid leaving objects on the range when it is not in use and check the range knobs to ensure they are not activated prior to leaving the house or going to bed.

Some of the ranges are wifi enabled and can be programmed to send a โ€œCooktop Onโ€ alert when a burner is turned on, the recall notice states.

Unger filed the Samsung class action lawsuit on behalf of all persons in the United States who purchased at least one of the recalled Samsung ranges between May 2013 and August 2024. He also seeks to represent a New York subclass.

The lawsuit asserts claims for breach of express warranty, unjust enrichment and violations of New York business law.

Unger is represented by Philip J. Furia and Jason P. Sultzer of Sultzer & Lipari PLLC and Paul J. Doolittle and Seth Little of Pulin Willey Anastopoulo LLC.

The Samsung class action lawsuit is Matthew Unger v. Samsung Electronics America Inc., Case No. 1:24-cv-05689, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

  1. Steven Humphrey says:

This just happened to me, except while putting pizzas in the oven to keep warm in their boxes, with the stove off of course. The from panel buttons can also be accidentally touched without a โ€œfailsafeโ€ confirmation dialogue. Iโ€™m my instance, the self clean was pressed and proceeded to cremate the pizzas and boxes i just put in there. Once clean is activated, the door locks. I could do nothing until the fire went out inside the oven; so i could clear the smoldering debris and throw it outside. The whole front panel is a hazard and Iโ€™m returning mine back to home Depot where i bought it. My biggest question is, how did this appliance get itโ€™s UL approval?

  2. Betty Rowland says:

My comes on anytime your near it. Have had things catch on fire several times. If you have children in the home extremely hazardous. And I donโ€™t feel the tacky plastic covers are an acceptable fix.

  3. Mrs. Gee says:

We must be included in this Lawsuit with Mr. Unger! Add Us, whether Samsung ovens/stoves are Electric or Gas, these knobs do turn on by themselves (We do not like Samsung Products: like others said their dishwashers (washes all day & night, takes forever to wash, their buttons are difficult to press to start or stop: not set for you to not be able to tell it Product how long you want it to wash like options of: 15 minutes, 30 minutes: their ovens, when you are baking foods, especially cakes only option to what they call cook/brown the top of the cake is โ€œBroilโ€ (in which time you turn oven on Broil, you have burnt the top of your cakes within seconds): it will not let you reduce the temperature lower example like the Bake/Roast Options under 350: Broil says High (H) temperature: why would any-1 create a product the Users are unable to control or set to a desired temperature? Only using it because WE have not addโ€™l money to replace these appliances!

  4. Alejandro Castillo says:

We also have one the knobs are so cheap and the oven seems to turn on by itself when the steam from the pots whenever Iโ€™m cooking hits like the dash it seems it activates the wifi then activates the lock door and then the ovenโ€ฆ

  5. Alison St. Clair says:

We have one of the recalled models and the remedy was cheap, loose-fitting plastic pieces with 4 fingers sticking down that go over the top edge of the rounded outside part of the knob. The short fingers go behind the knob and the long ones go in front. A child or pet could easily knock it out of place and the original issue remains. Unbelievable and unacceptable!!

  6. Fee says:

Yes and Iโ€™ve had to call the fire dept numerous times for the smell of gas only to be told its my samsung knobs. Itโ€™s become a duty now to always check them morning afternoon night just to make sure it isnโ€™t on. Smh and samsung is no help.

  7. jim says:

  9. Natalie D Kern says:

  10. Sherri Atkins says:
