Monsanto Company is facing a growing number of product liability claims alleging a correlation between Roundup and lymphoma, with an Alabama woman filing one of the most recent claims. She filed her Roundup lawsuit alleging Monsanto Company either knew or should have known about the alleged correlation between Roundup and lymphoma.
Plaintiff Dorothy R. filed the Roundup lawsuit alleging the company had failed to warn her and the general public about Roundup and lymphoma. As a direct result of regular exposure to Roundup, Dorothy claims, she developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was diagnosed with the disease in 2015.
According to the Roundup lawsuit, Dorothy had regularly used Roundup between 1990 and 2017 for typical purposes. During all times relevant, Dorothy says she used Roundup for its intended purpose and had followed all safety warnings and instructions when using the product.
Dorothy did not notice any language indicating a link between Roundup and lymphoma, or the studies showing a potential correlation. Dorothy had opted to file legal action after discovering Roundup’s main ingredient glyphosate had been associated with increased risk of cancer.
Overview of Roundup and Lymphoma Correlation
Roundup is one of the most popular weedkillers in the United States, with its primary ingredient making it an incredibly effective method for killing weeds. Glyphosate is a “non selective” herbicide, which indiscriminately kills plants producing the specific enzyme EPSP synthase.
Over 200 million pounds of glyphosate are used each year, treating cops, commercial nurses, suburban lawns, parks, and golf courses. Roundup has been used by farmers, companies, and regular consumers for the past 40 years, all of whom could have been unaware of the alleged correlation between Roundup and lymphoma.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been concerned over the carcinogenic properties of glyphosate since the 1980s, after researchers began noticing that a large number of farmers had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Recently the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report in March 2015, which concluded glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen.
The report was released after several studies published in the United States, Canada, and Sweden, with one study beginning in 2001. The study stemming back to 2001 came from Canada and was published by the American Association for Cancer Research in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
According to researchers, people exposed to glyphosate faced an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma within just 10 years after exposure.
The United States study was published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, which concluded that glyphosate and other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma] incidence.”
The IARC report had also found that four other pesticides may also be linked to cancer. Even though the Monsanto Company was aware of the alleged link between Roundup and lymphoma for years, the company allegedly failed to warn the public.
At all times relevant, Dorothy says, she did not receive any warnings or disclosures from Monsanto Company regarding a potential Roundup and lymphoma correlation. Dorothy states if she had known about the alleged link, she would not have used the popular weedkiller. Dorothy is filing this Roundup lawsuit seeking multiple damages, including negligence and failure to warn.
