A new nationwide class action lawsuit accuses the gaming platform Roblox of failing to protect minors on its gaming platform from sexual predators and other dangers.
The plaintiffs, a group of parents, filed the class action complaint against Roblox Corporation Sept. 12 in California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
Roblox is a popular online gaming platform that allows users to create and play games created by other users. The platform is particularly popular among children, with more than half of its users under the age of 13, the plaintiffs say.
However, the parents allege that Roblox has failed to protect its young users from sexual predators who use the platform to groom and exploit children.
“Roblox has long been on notice to take reasonable steps to protect its young users from exposure to any explicit, pornographic or sexual materials, or from any exploitation from other users on the Roblox safety Platform,” the class action lawsuit says.
The company is also facing allegations of causing video game addiction in minors.
Roblox allegedly prioritizes profits over safety, class action claims
The plaintiffs allege that Roblox has failed to implement adequate safety measures to protect children from predators. They claim the company has also failed to warn parents about the risks associated with the platform.
“Instead of taking reasonable steps to secure the Roblox safety Platform, especially given the history of minors harmed on the Platform, Roblox has yet to implement appropriate safety measures for its Platform,” the lawsuit says.
The plaintiffs say they were forced to either ban their children from using Roblox, losing any money spent on the platform, or spend additional money on safety tools. They allege that Roblox has profited from parents’ efforts to protect their children.
The plaintiffs are suing on behalf of anyone who purchased Robux, the platform’s virtual currency, for a minor. They are asking the court for certification of the class action, damages, fees and costs and a court order requiring Roblox to implement adequate safety measures to protect children from predators.
In another Roblox class action lawsuit filed this year, the company stands accused of secretly tracking children’s data.
