Risperdal side effectsBreast growth among boys after taking the popular antipsychotic drug Risperdal is becoming a growing concern.

Risperdal is manufactured by drug giant Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat autism, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Ten families have already filed product liability lawsuits against the makers of Risperdal, alleging that the drug can cause breast growth in young males, with cup sizes as large as 38D. The Risperdal lawsuits contain allegations of negligence and fraud as the plaintiffs claim that the makers failed to properly warn consumers about the severe risks involved with their product.

According to the Risperdal lawsuits, numerous boys suffered serious breast growth and weight gain after taking Risperdal. The doctors of the victims observed these signs and treated them as if the enlarged breasts were just a result of additional weight gain. For some young boys, their symptoms were so severe that they actually required breast tissue removal.

Antipsychotics are alarming more and more parents since a deep investigation was launched into the FDA’s Division of Pharmacovigilance recently. FDA viewers issued a report to the FDA after adverse metabolic side effects were being correlated to children taking antipsychotics. In the report, it was urged that more studies be carried out and looked into before drugs like antipsychotics are introduced into the market.

As of now, Risperdal does carry a label stating that unusual breast growth could be a side effect after consumption. The problem is that these risks were not properly made apparent to the individual, according to product liability lawyers. In addition, it is being argued by the plaintiffs that the manufacturers downplayed the severity of the risk entirely. According to prescribing information on the drug, 2.3% of adolescents in the clinical trials exhibited breast growth after taking Risperdal.

In general, Risperdal lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
