Ikea Kullen drawer recallThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that IKEA is recalling its Kullen 3-drawer chests over reports that the dresser could fall.

Customers who purchased the dressers are eligible for a refund or a repair from IKEA.

The recall was implemented on March 4, 2020, after IKEA received six reports of the Kullen chests tipping over.

Reportedly, these incidents occurred in cases where the chests were not anchored to the wall. One incident in which the chests tipped over resulted in minor cuts and bruises, says the CPSC.

Customers are invited to report incidents involving the product on the CPSC website.

The recall affects around 820,000 units sold in the United States, and around 150,000 sold in Canada. The recall was implemented in conjunction with Canada to protect customers in both countries.

The CPSC explains that in addition to posing a tip over hazard, Kullen chests imported after Aug. 12, 2019 are not in compliance with the updated U.S. consensus standard requirements.

Customers who purchased the chests are advised to immediately stop using the furniture, and to keep it out of reach of children. Customers are eligible for either a free refund of their purchase, or they can receive a repair for their chest.

If a customer chooses a refund, the chests can either be returned in-store, or IKEA will pick up the chest for free. If a customer chooses a repair, they will receive a wall-attachment anchor kit. They can either choose to install the kit to the dresser themselves, or IKEA will provide a free installation of the wall attachment.

Customers can find more information about the recall by calling IKEA at 888-966-4532 between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Kullen three-drawer chests are 28 3/8 inches tall, and weigh around 45 pounds. They are sold in birch and black-brown. The name Kullen, the Ikea logo, country of origin, 4-digit sate stamp, and a 5-digit supplier number are located inside the side panel or on the underside of the top panel.

The birch three-drawer chest are article number 600-930-58, and the black-brown chests are article number 501-637-54 and 803-221-34. The recall number for all of the chests is 20-085.

In recent years, other dressers and chests have been the subject of recalls, over similar concerns that they can tip over and crush a user. One such dresser was the Target Room Essentials four-drawer dresser.

Children and elderly people are particularly at risk for injury or death in a dresser tip-over, because they may not have the strength to lift the dresser off of them.
