Railroad workers who developed cancer after their time in the railroad industry may be able to file legal action against the railroad companies. These railroad workers may have developed cancer due to exposure to hazardous chemicals like benzene and asbestos.
Even though benzene has been banned for over 20 years in the United States, these railroad workers were exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis. One of the most serious concerns is the link between railroad work and bladder cancer, due to the daily chemical exposure employees faced every day.
These exposures include benzene exposure, chemical solvent exposure, and exposure to welding fumes have been reportedly contributing to the railroad work and bladder cancer link. The chemicals commonly used in the railroad industry are reportedly carcinogens, which are chemicals that have been linked to cancer.
Railroad work and bladder cancer are closely associated with each other, because railroad industry workers may not be provided with safety equipment and are reportedly not warned in advance by the railroad company.
Overview of Railroad Work and Bladder Cancer Association
As mentioned before, benzene is one of these chemicals that railroad workers may breathe in every day, increasing the risk of cancer. Benzene has been classified as a cancerous instigator by several health authorities including: the Department of Health and Human Services, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Benzene is commonly used as a solvent for lubricating locomotives, and is also present in diesel exhaust. However, benzene is not the only chemical that increases the risk of railroad work and bladder cancer, including: the chemicals used to treat coat railroad ties, creosote or coal tar, also contribute to the link between railroad and bladder cancer.
Asbestos was used widely used in the manufacturing process in creating train components between 1930s to 1970s. But railroad companies reportedly continued to use the material even after it was significantly restricted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration during the 1970s.
In addition, railroad workers can also be exposed to radioactive materials due to the railroad company reportedly using uranium and other radioactive materials used to build nuclear weapons. All of these dangerous chemicals can contribute to the alleged association between railroad work and bladder cancer.
Bladder cancer occurs when malignant cells grow and takeover the lining of the bladder. It can be potentially fatal if not treated properly. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be implemented to treat or slow down the condition, but an artificial bladder or sections of the intestines or colon may be needed to prevent death in serious cases.
While patients are contending with the disease of bladder cancer, they still have to deal with expensive medical bills. Former railroad workers who have developed cancer may be able to file legal action against the railroad industry. Potential claimants should contact a lawyer familiar with claims under the Federal Employer Liability Act to determine eligibility for a railroad cancer lawsuit.
