Although it’s a staple in many kitchens, a pressure cooker can present dangers most people don’t think about until they actually experience a catastrophe. Most people trust that these devices that have been around for centuries are made with more safety features in place than in years past.

Unfortunately, some of today’s models come with a risk of pressure cooker malfunction due to defective parts and unpredictable device failures.

The modern pressure cooker is based upon a model invented by French physicist Denis Papin in 1679. He invented the “steam digester” to try to reduce the time it took to cook food. He created an airtight cooker that used steam pressure to raise the water’s boiling point, which resulted in the food cooking much more quickly.

Manufacturers Responsible for Pressure Cooker Malfunction

Pressure cookers are dangerous because the pressure inside can increase up to 15 pounds per square inch. The cooking temperature can reach 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

The combination of high pressure and extremely hot temperature can potentially cause harm if a design defect or manufacturing defect leads to a pressure cooker malfunction.

Consumers have reported pressure cooker explosions that occur when the lid suddenly blows off, slamming scalding hot liquid and food onto the skin of anyone standing nearby. Some of these explosions have occurred even after the consumers have followed the device’s instructions to supposedly depressurize the unit before attempting to loosen and open the lid.

One pressure cooker malfunction is a faulty valve that fails to release pressure as it should. Another problem is locking lids that are intended to keep the lid from loosening until the contents have been depressurized. These “safe” lids explode off the container under the intense heat and pressure, sending extremely hot food and liquid flying. The blasting lid and contents pose dangers to nearby consumers who can experience first, second, and third degree burns.

Another possible pressure cooker malfunction is the leaking of hot steam that escapes from the device before the seal is purposely broken. The steam finds a weakness in the airtight seal and escapes, burning the unsuspecting consumer who is not expecting the seal to prematurely break.

Personal injury lawsuits that stem from pressure cooker malfunctions have been filed against manufacturers and against some retailers. Consumers suffering serious burn injuries seek compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses, disfigurement, lost wages, damaged property and other related expenditures.

If a pressure cooker malfunction did not cause physical injury, the victim can still join a class action lawsuit for compensation for money lost buying a defective device that did not perform safely in the home. Manufacturers can be held responsible for design defects, manufacturing defects and/or marketing defects, including the failure to warn of potential dangers.

If you have suffered from a pressure cooker malfunction, you could benefit by speaking with an attorney regarding your options for legal representation.
