Many different models reportedly can experience malfunctions due to defective parts and unpredictable device failures. Reports of pressure cooker accidents describe unsuspecting users being surprised with steam burns and sudden explosions.

One Texas woman spent 20 days in a hospital’s burn unit after her pressure cooker exploded hot pinto beans all over her two hours after she had unplugged the device. A Florida man suffered second-degree burns to his arms, fingers and leg after a pressure cooker exploded as he removed the lid.

Among the brands being investigated for causing pressure cooker accidents are:

  • Aldi
  • Crofton
  • Cuisinart
  • Maxi-Matic
  • Tristar
  • Wolfgang Puck
  • Others

Pressure Cooker Accidents Due to Poor Seals, Faulty Valves

Pressure cookers are dangerous because the pressure inside can increase up to 15 pounds per square inch. The cooking temperature can reach 250 degrees Fahrenheit. The device works by trapping steam that increases the pressure inside the pot and raises the boiling point of water. This allows the food to cook much more quickly.

The combination of high pressure and extremely hot temperature can cause pressure cooker accidents when the devices aren’t working properly.

Consumers have reported pressure cooker explosions that occur when the lid suddenly blows off, slamming scalding hot liquid and food onto the skin of anyone standing nearby. Some of these explosions have occurred even after the consumers have followed the device’s instructions to supposedly depressurize the unit before attempting to loosen and open the lid.

Pressure cooker accidents can be caused by a faulty valve that fails to release pressure as it should. Another problem is locking lids that are intended to keep the lid from loosening until the contents have been depressurized. These supposedly “safe” lids explode off the container under the intense heat and pressure, sending extremely hot food and liquid flying. The blasting lid and contents pose dangers to nearby consumers who can experience first, second, and third degree burns.

Another possible reason for pressure cooker accidents is the leaking of hot steam that escapes from the device before the seal is purposely broken. The steam finds a weakness in the lid’s seal and slips through, burning the unsuspecting consumer who is not expecting it.

Personal injury lawsuits that stem from pressure cooker accidents have been filed against manufacturers and against some retailers. Consumers suffering serious burn injuries seek compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses, disfigurement, lost wages, damaged property and other related expenditures.

If a pressure cooker accident did not cause physical injury, the user may still have a claim for compensation for money lost buying a defective device that did not perform safely in the home. Manufacturers can be held responsible for design defects, manufacturing defects and/or marketing defects, including the failure to warn of potential dangers.
