Thousands of women have undergone uterine fibroid surgery with a power morcellator, and later discovered that the tool actually caused them to develop cancer. Many power morcellator lawsuits, and even wrongful death lawsuits, have been filed as a result.
Just in the past few months, multiple power morcellator lawsuits have been filed against companies such as Karl Storz and Johnson & Johnson.
One was filed by a woman who claimed the power morcellator caused her to develop sudden stage 4 cancer, which spread to her breasts and bones. A wrongful death power morcellator lawsuit was filed by the husband of a woman who allegedly died due to power morcellator complications.
Power Morcellator Dangers
These power morcellation lawsuits were filed by or on behalf of women who had undiagnosed cancer in their bodies. Power morcellators enter the body through a small insert in the abdomen. It then cuts up the uterine fibroids or other tissue that is going to be removed.
What happened to many women was that the power morcellator caused the previously undetected cancer cells to leave the uterus and spread throughout the body.
Thousands of women undergo uterine fibroid surgery every year. The FDA stated that one out of every 352 women who are having uterine fibroids removed may have undetected cancer.
For a period of time, power morcellators were considered to be a less invasive method for performing uterine fibroid surgery, hysterectomies, and myomectomies. Yet the high number of power morcellator cancer cases has caused many surgeons to stop using the device. Currently, the FDA is investigating power morcellator safety.
Power Morcellator Lawsuits
It is nearly impossible to tell before surgery if a woman has uterine sarcoma or not. Women who have developed power morcellator cancer claimed that they were not aware of any signs of cancer before the surgery.
Allegations in power morcellator lawsuits have claimed that power morcellator manufacturers did not adequately test their devices and that they failed to warn their users about the potentially deadly side effects which could follow a common surgery.
Ethicon, Blue Endo, Karl Storz, and other companies have been implicated in power morcellator lawsuits. They may have to pay for the medical costs, lost wages, and other fees of their power morcellator victims.
