A number of patients have reported experiencing problems following the implantation of the Optetrak knee replacement device. Rather than experiencing pain relief following their knee replacement surgery, these patients have allegedly experienced continued or increased pain due to problems with their Optetrak knee replacement.
Problems Associated with Optetrak Knee Replacement Devices
A variety of problems have been reported following Optetrak knee replacement surgeries, and a research study was conducted to look at these reported problems in greater detail.
In the journal entitled Orthopedics and Traumatology: Surgery & Research, an article published in June 2012 discussed the results of a study that looked at 106 patients who were implanted with the Optetrak knee replacement device. According to the study, these patients were studied over 25 months and the results showed that patients with the Optetrak knee replacement had poor surgical outcomes.
A summary of results of the Optetrak knee replacement study is as follows:
- 110 knee replacements were studied for 106 patients, with several patients having had bilateral Optetrak knee replacement surgeries performed. Patients were followed for 12 to 42 months during the study.
- The study concluded that 15% of patients were disappointed or dissatisfied with the results of their Optetrak knee replacement.
- Painful knees were described by 22% of the patients, and these patients had to take painkillers on a regular basis in order to ease the discomfort caused by the Optetrak knee replacement.
- Tibial implant loosening was experienced by 22% of the patients.
- Patellofemoral conflict was reported by 21% of the study patients.
- Thirteen patients underwent revision surgery due to complications brought on by the Optetrak knee replacement. Nine of these patients experienced cement-tibial-implant interface issues involving tibial loosening, patellofemoral instability plagued three of the patients, and one patient had the revision surgery as a result of patellofemoral pain that was experienced.
Knee implant complications typically include inflammation, swelling, and pain at the surgery site, as well as loss of mobility, impaired range of motion, instability, difficulty with balance, and other issues. The only way to address many of these issues is for patients to undergo a knee revision surgery to remove the faulty implant and replace it with another implant that hopefully does not give the patient continued problems.
However, knee revision surgeries often create a greater risk of complications compared to the initial knee replacement surgery. Patients who undergo revision surgeries may have additional damage that has been caused by the implant, not only does the new implant need to be placed but any damage caused by the implant must be addressed as well. Surgical complications are increased and recovery time is greater in revision surgeries.
