Oyster recall overview:
- Who: Stellar Bay Shellfish Ltd. and other brands are recalling certain raw oysters.
- Why: The oysters may be contaminated with norovirus.
- Where: The recall is active in 10 states in the United States.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Stellar Bay Shellfish have issued a recall for raw oysters harvested in Canada due to potential norovirus contamination.
The recall affects oysters harvested between Dec. 22, 2025, and Feb. 4, 2026, in Canada and distributed to several U.S. states.
The oyster recall is significant as it involves multiple states, specifically California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, and the well-known brand Stellar Bay Shellfish.
The recall, announced on Feb. 18 by the FDA, advised restaurants and retailers to stop serving and selling these oysters.
The affected products include the Kusshi, Chrome Point, Stellar Bay and Stellar Bay Gold brands. The oysters were harvested from British Columbia, Canada, specifically from harvest area BC 17-20 (Nanoose Bay) CLF #1401656.
According to the FDA, consuming these oysters can lead to norovirus infection, which is particularly dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems.
“Anyone who consumes the recalled oysters and begins experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider and report their symptoms to their local health department,” the recall notice advises.
Consumers warned against eating recalled oysters
The FDA’s alert emphasizes that the oysters may appear normal but could still be contaminated with norovirus.
Symptoms of norovirus infection include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain, typically appearing 12 to 48 hours after exposure. The FDA advises that most people recover within one to three days, but severe dehydration can occur, especially in vulnerable populations.
“Consumers who have symptoms of norovirus infection should contact their healthcare provider to report their symptoms and receive care,” the FDA advises. The agency is monitoring the situation and will update the public as more information becomes available.
Stellar Bay Shellfish is working with distributors to ensure that the recalled oysters are removed from the market. The company has advised restaurants and retailers to dispose of the affected products and take measures to prevent cross-contamination in their facilities.
For more information about the oyster recall, consumers and retailers can visit the FDA’s website or contact their local health department for guidance.
Stellar Bay Shellfish says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
