Onglyza, whose generic name is saxagliptin, is an oral diabetes medicine that is taken to control blood sugar levels. It specifically works by moderating the amount of insulin there is in the body after the digestion of food. It is more commonly taken by people who suffer from type-2 diabetes, but can also be taken by people who suffer from type-1 diabetes with other medications.
Currently, however, Onglyza heart failure has been reported in recent research. According to the FDA, a recent study had even discovered that patients who take medications such as Onglyza are at risk “of hospitalization due to heart failure.”
Onglyza heart failure is a condition that occurs when not enough blood is pumped throughout the body because the heart is not a strong enough muscle. Additionally, coronary artery disease and high blood pressure and conditions that may cause the heart muscle to weaken, and these will also result in heart failure.
Onglyza lawyers are now investigating patients’ legal options for holding the drug’s manufacturers responsible for patients who had suffered from serious side effects such as congestive heart failure, cardiac failure, heart failure and death.
Facts and History of Onglyza Heart Failure
Onglyza was approved by the FDA in July 2009. As a drug that contains saxagliptin, it is used to help moderate the high blood sugar levels of patients who suffer from hyperglycemia or type-2 diabetes. Diabetes is the most common cause of hyperglycemia, and hyperglycemia is the hallmark sign of patients who suffer from both type-1 diabetes and type-2 diabetes.
Onglyza belongs to a group of drugs called incretin mimetics, a relatively new group of drugs for treatment of patients who suffer from type-2 diabetes. It specifically stimulates the production of the hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, to regulate the high blood sugar levels in patients that have type-2 diabetes. The creation of this new group of injectable drugs gained additional attention after the recall of Avandia, a drug linked to the susceptibility of cardiac death.
The Onglyza heart failure adverse side effect and other diabetes drugs is still being investigated. Medical practitioners and pharmaceutical companies continue to look for other type-2 diabetes treatments that offer safer substitutes and less serious adverse effects.
Moreover, in a study known as the SAVOR study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, researchers discovered that patients who took Onglyza had a higher risk of being hospitalized for heart failure than did patients who took other diabetes drugs.
