Nissan engine failure recall overview:
- Who: Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling 443,899 vehicles in the United States.
- Why: The recall is due to a manufacturing defect in the engine bearings, which can lead to engine failure.
- Where: The recall affects vehicles in the United States and Canada.
Nissan is recalling more than 480,000 vehicles across the U.S. and Canada due to potential engine failure risks. The affected models include the 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50, and 2022 Infiniti QX55, all equipped with VC-Turbo engines.
The June 27 recall affects vehicles with 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engines. The issue stems from manufacturing defects in the engine bearings, which could lead to engine damage or complete failure, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
According to the recall, dealers will inspect the engine oil pan for metal debris and perform necessary repairs or replacements free of charge.
Drivers can look out for early warning signs, Nissan recall says
The VC-Turbo recall notice emphasizes that the engine bearing failures tend to develop over time, allowing drivers to potentially detect warning signs before a complete failure occurs.
These signs include unusual noises or the illumination of malfunction indicator lights, according to the recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that approximately 1.2% of the recalled vehicles are estimated to have this defect.
Nissan is taking proactive measures to address this issue. The company will send notification letters to affected vehicle owners by August 25 instructing them to visit a Nissan dealer or Infiniti retailer for inspection and necessary repairs. The repairs will be conducted at no cost to the vehicle owners.
“Nissan initiated this recall as part of its ongoing commitment to customer safety,” the company said in an email.
For more information, vehicle owners can visit the NHTSA website or use Nissan’s recall lookup tool to verify if their vehicle is affected by this recall. Additionally, Nissan’s customer service can be reached at 800-647-7261, and Infiniti’s customer service at 1-800-662-6200 for further assistance.
Nissan says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the engine failure recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Nissan recently agreed to a class action settlement to resolve claims that certain Nissan Murano and Maxima vehicles were equipped with a defective continuously variable transmission (CVT) and that Nissan knew about the defect but failed to disclose it to car owners.
