Numerous manufacturing companies have been hit with an asbestos lawsuit, with a New York husband and wife alleging the companies failed to protect them against the dangers of asbestos exposure.
The plaintiff couple alleges the manufacturing companies produced and provided different parts containing asbestos that were used on United States Navy ships.
The husband worked on these ships and handled these parts.
New York Man Diagnosed With Mesothelioma, Claims Asbestos Exposure
New York plaintiff couple Aurelio M. and Sandra M. are filing a legal action together, after Aurelio was diagnosed with mesothelioma and the couple discovered the US Navy ship had parts reportedly composed of asbestos.
From 1952 to 1956, Aurelio was a member of the United States Navy and had served aboard the USS Mattabesset (AOG-52) and the USS Cadmus (AR-14). After time in the Navy, he was employed by the Pall Corporation from 1957 to 1965.
During his time in the Navy and his employment, Aurelio was allegedly exposed to asbestos on a daily basis and brought the fibers home to his wife because they were attached to his clothes.
Due to the alleged daily asbestos exposure, Aurelio was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Overview of Asbestos Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of lung cancer. Cancer cells form and take over the mucus lining of the lungs.
This particular form of lung cancer is caused by asbestos exposure after patients either swallow or inhale the asbestos fibers.
Once the fibers are consumed, they embed themselves in the lungs or lung mucus lining and eventually fester into cancer cells.
Before the 1980s, asbestos was popularly used for construction and insulation purposes due to its fire and chemical resistant qualities.
However there are a number of dangers associated with asbestos exposure prompting federal regulations for asbestos removal.
Patients diagnosed with mesothelioma can reasonably assume they were exposed to asbestos at some point, as this condition is one of the primary public health concerns in conjunction with asbestos exposure.
Patients can have mesothelioma for years before showing any symptoms, with some cases taking as long as 50 years before showing any signs. Due to the disease’s slow progression, patients are often diagnosed with mesothelioma at a latent stage and have little treatment options.
Over the years, numerous patients have filed legal action against manufacturing companies for failing to provide adequate safety equipment. When Aurelio was diagnosed with mesothelioma, he and his wife soon discovered that this disease was completely preventable.
The couple alleges manufacturing companies either knew or should have known of the dangers associated with asbestos exposure.
Aurelio and his wife are suing the manufacturing companies for loss of consortium and multiple counts of damage, along with Pall Corporation for failing to protect him during his employment.
