A Connecticut man recently filed a lawsuit against General Electric, alleging that he was exposed to asbestos and asbestos lung disease because of its products.
The plaintiff, Frank R., worked for a number of employers over the years in a variety of capacities, including as a chemical operator, repair man, and in shipping and production. In these positions, and during his time serving in the military, Frank alleges he was exposed to asbestos fibers from products made by General Electric. That exposure, he claims, led directly to his diagnosis with asbestos lung disease.
Frank filed his asbestos lung disease lawsuit on Sept. 6, 2017 on multiple counts, including products liability and exemplary or punitive damages. He claims that General Electric’s products were a serious health hazard, and that the company failed to give adequate warning about the risk of asbestos lung disease linked with the use of their products.
Background of Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral used for commercial purposes such as electrical or building insulation, as well as countless other uses. The microscopic fibers of asbestos can accumulate in the lungs. Asbestos exposure can cause several critical health problems, including asbestos lung disease.
Construction workers make up a large number of those who file lawsuits over asbestos lung disease, as construction work often involves being constantly surrounded by products and equipment made with asbestos. Sawing and cutting asbestos products makes asbestos fibers even more likely to be released into the air and into a worker’s lungs. In many cases, workers may be without proper protection or even warning of the dangers of asbestos and lung cancer.
However, dangerous asbestos fibers can also be carried home on a worker’s clothing, exposing family members as well. Others, such as home gardeners, may be exposed via simple home products that contain asbestos.
Filing an Asbestos Lung Disease Lawsuit
According to many lawsuits filed over asbestos lung disease, companies that allow workers to be exposed to asbestos should have been aware of the dangerous nature of their asbestos-containing materials. Plaintiffs say companies should also be aware of this material’s ability to cause asbestos lung disease, cancer, and even fatality.
If someone you love has died from asbestos lung disease after long-term exposure to asbestos, you may be able to file an asbestos wrongful death lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by asbestos cancer or bring a loved one back to life, it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
The Asbestos Lung Disease Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-01495-VLB, in the Superior Court for the State of Connecticut.
