A Connecticut man alleges that asbestos exposure during his time in the U.S. Navy and his career as a laborer led to his diagnosis with a dangerous asbestos disease.
The plaintiff, William L., says that he served in the Navy in the 1960s, then worked as a painter and laborer from 1968 to 1974. He claims that, during this time, he was exposed to asbestos products from a number of manufacturers, and subsequently inhaled asbestos dust and fibers.
As a result, William was diagnosed with an asbestos disease. The lawsuit claims that this asbestos disease has not only caused pain and suffering and incurred medical expenses, but has also shortened his life span.
According to the asbestos disease lawsuit, the defendants have been aware of research showing a link between exposure to asbestos fibers and dangerous asbestos disease including cancer. However, the defendants (the manufacturers of these products)
William filed his asbestos disease lawsuit on June 21, 2018, in the Superior Court for the Judicial District of Fairfield at Bridgeport. The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including product liability, negligence, and failure to warn, among others. William’s wife Denise also filed on one count of loss of consortium because of his diagnosis with asbestos disease.
Risk of Asbestos Disease
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that used to be popular for commercial purposes such as electrical or building insulation, as well as countless others. However, the material is now known to be hazardous, and regulations regarding the use of asbestos have been in place for decades.
The microscopic fibers of asbestos can accumulate in a person’s lungs via the air, attacking the lining of the lungs, and then quickly spreads to distant organs. Asbestos exposure can cause several serious health problems, including lung cancer and mesothelioma cancer.
In many cases, lung cancer or mesothelioma can take decades to develop, so it is often diagnosed at a late stage of development, when it has reached its later and more dangerous stage of development. Even though the use of asbestos has been heavily regulated in the last few decades, this delay in cancer development means that those exposed to asbestos decades ago are only now being diagnosed with life-threatening cancer.
