Due to the nature of his occupation, Steven allegedly experienced Navy asbestos exposure from working with the materials provided by the companies and the asbestos fibers produced in other areas of the work environment. As an alleged result of this regular Navy asbestos exposure, Steven was eventually diagnosed with mesothelioma in January 2017.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that festers in the membranes that surround the lungs, and is specifically caused by asbestos exposure. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or swallowed, they become embedded in either the lungs or stomach respectively and sit there for a number of years.
