Wells Enterprises ice cream recall overview:

  • Who: Wells Enterprises is recalling 22 varieties of ice cream and frozen yogurt.
  • Why: The recall is due to the potential presence of plastic in the products.
  • Where: The recall is effective across the United States.

Wells Enterprises, also known as Wells Dairy, has initiated a nationwide recall of over 22 ice cream and frozen yogurt varieties distributed to more than 100 facilities.

Wells Enterprises makes popular brands like Blue Bunny, Halo Top, Bomb Pop, and Blue Ribbon. Recalled flavors include Rocky Road, Vanilla, Cotton Candy, and Mocha Almond Fudge.

The frozen yogurt and ice cream recall affects products sold in 3-gallon containers and distributed to 103 centers, including restaurants and cafeterias.

The largest affected lot includes 5,280 tubs of “Vanilla Frozen Yogurt”. All products have “Best If Used By” dates from March to October 2026. A full listing of the products is in the recall notice.

The Wells Enterprises ice cream recall, classified as Class II by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was announced on April 25 and involves the potential contamination of these products with hard plastic, posing risks like dental injury or choking.

According to the recall notice, “Hard plastic, for example, may originate from ingredients like toppings or from utensils, such as mixing paddles.”

Recall notice urges consumers to return affected products

Consumers are advised to check batch codes and remove any affected inventory.

The recall notice emphasizes the importance of vigilance, stating, “Extraneous material may become a physical hazard and cause lacerations (cuts), occlusion (choking) and other injuries to the tongue, gums and teeth.”

Consumers should discontinue use of the affected products and return them to the place of purchase.

Wells Enterprises is working to address the issue and ensure the safety of its products. For more information, consumers can contact Wells Enterprises via their website.

Wells Enterprises says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Last month, Johnsonville recalled more than 22,000 pounds of its cheddar bratwurst also due to possible contamination with hard plastic.
