N.Y. Rep. McCarthy Links Asbestos to Her Cancer, Sues 70 Companies
By Dominic Rivera
New York Rep. Carolyn McCarthy is suing more than 70 companies for allegedly causing her lung cancer from second-hand asbestos exposure.
The companies in the asbestos exposure lawsuit include Goodyear Tire, Con Edison and Pfizer. Rep. McCarthy took a medical leave from her post in Congress to get treatment for her lung cancer.
“Ms. McCarthy never directly worked with asbestos products herself, although now she finds herself a victim of this deadly carcinogen whose health effects were well known by the manufacturers and suppliers of asbestos products for decades before Ms. McCarthy was ever exposed,” news reports quoted Rep. McCarthy’s attorney Daniel Blouin.
Her lawyer contends that she came in contact with asbestos when she was young while her father and brothers worked as boiler makers in Navy yards and powerhouses. She never worked with any of the defendant companies.
Even though asbestos has been largely phased out of building materials, it’s still possible to be exposed to the deadly mineral and be diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, asbestos warts, pleural warts, pleural plaques, pneumothorax, among others. Even family members of workers exposed to asbestos are at risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma, even though they never handled or worked with asbestos. This is why family members are also participating in mesothelioma class action lawsuits or individual asbestos lawsuits and being awarded portions of asbestos compensation funds.
Here is what the asbestos lawsuit failed to mention – that according to news reports, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, 69, was a smoker for 40 years. Reports say that she is known in Congress for taking breaks between votes to smoke. Despite this fact, some asbestos victims are still able to secure settlements for their injuries.
