diabetes-warning-lipitorA Massachusetts woman filed a Lipitor diabetes lawsuit against Pfizer, Inc., alleging that the drug caused her to develop Type-2 diabetes.

Plaintiff Alexandrina P. began taking Lipitor in 1989. She was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes in 2004, according to the lawsuit.

The 57-year-old’s Lipitor diabetes lawsuit accuses Pfizer of negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, design defect, fraud and misrepresentation, among other charges.

Alexandrina’s lawsuit comes at a time when similar Lipitor diabetes lawsuits are on the rise. The increase follows the release of studies showing a link between Lipitor and Type-2 diabetes. Other similar drugs have also been shown to have diabetes side effects.

In the several months following the publication of these studies, the number of Lipitor lawsuits increased dramatically, from a few dozen to several hundred.

Plaintiffs involved in these Lipitor diabetes lawsuits allege that Pfizer knew, or should have known, of the potential risk of developing Type-2 diabetes from taking Lipitor.

The risk appears to disproportionately affect women. And the benefit of Lipitor appears to be disproportionately lower.

A study by the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that post-menopausal women taking Lipitor were almost 50% more likely to develop Type-2 diabetes than those who did not. The study looked at records of 150,000 women taking Lipitor over an extended period.

Lipitor Diabetes

Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) became of the best selling prescription drugs in the country soon after it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996.

Following the release of studies linking Lipitor with Type-2 diabetes,  the FDA responded by issuing a warning about these complications. Pfizer continues to maintain that the benefits of Lipitor to control cholesterol outweighs any potential risks.

If you or someone you know was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes after taking Lipitor or a similar drug, you may be able to file a lawsuit.

This Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is Case No. 2:15-cv-04029-RMG, in the U.S. District Court in the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.
