Many people who have had knee replacement surgery to fix severe knee problems do not have any complications arise as a result of their surgery or replacement device.
However, many patients who have the Arthrex iBalance knee replacement device have reported iBalance knee replacement problems.
Recalling the Arthrex iBalance Device
In 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a product recall for the Arthrex iBalance knee replacement device. The recall was issued after irregularities were discovered in the tibial tray that could prevent it from being compatible with other components. Almost 2,400 Arthrex iBalance implant devices were affected by this recall.
Apparently, the outside of the tibial tray had a smooth surface which is different than the rough texture of previous models. This smooth surface allegedly makes it incompatible with other parts of the knee device.
Many patients have reported the need for revision surgeries. Revision surgery is more complicated and risky than original implantation surgery. If a patient experiences Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems such as loosening or device failure, then revision surgery may be inevitable.
Risks of revision surgery include possible infection, nerve and tissue damage, bone loss and fracture. Those who must undergo revision surgery also may have to take more time off of work and have a longer recovery period.
Patients who need Arthrex iBalance knee replacement devices often have multi-compartmental cartilage degeneration resulting from osteoarthritis, or they may have suffered a trauma causing problems with the joint.
When the device was first marketed, patients were led to believe that this new Arthrex iBalance knee replacement device would be better than previous devices and would reduce the need for further surgeries.
Symptoms of Arthrex iBalance Knee Replacement Problems
There are many reported symptoms of Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems, some of which may necessitate revision surgery.
Chronic pain is a possible symptom of Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems. Pain for patients may be consistent and may worsen with time.
Another sign of Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems is inflammation. Inflammation near an artificial joint can cause fluid build up, swelling and immobility. Additionally, those patients with complications may include instability, loosening or fracture of the device. The components of the knee replacement device can become unstable and even move from where they are supposed to be.
Some patients, when experiencing Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems, feel a warmth in the knee as well. This is not a good sign and may indicate infection or other Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems.
Complications, such as mobility issues, bone fracture and the failure to bond also plague those patients with Arthrex iBalance knee replacement problems.
