Takeda Pharmaceuticals attempted to prove that a plaintiff’s smoking habit, and not its diabetes medication Actos, was the source of the plaintiff’s bladder cancer.
Pennsylvania resident John K. filed an Actos bladder cancer lawsuit against Takeda Pharmaceuticals alleging that his bladder cancer was an Actos side effect.
John was 74 when he was required to undergo surgery to have his bladder removed due to severe bladder cancer. The Actos bladder cancer lawsuit claimed that Takeda Pharmaceuticals has been aware of potential Actos complications year before John and other individuals developed bladder cancer. The plaintiff alleged that Takeda Pharmaceuticals concealed Actos bladder cancer dangers from the medical community in order to maintain its profit.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals claimed throughout the trial that bladder cancer was not an Actos side effect. The drug manufacturer stated that there was “no association” between Actos and bladder cancer. Instead, lawyers argued that John’s bladder cancer was caused by his smoking habit. John smoked two packs a day for 28 years.
The Actos bladder cancer lawsuit alleged that Takeda Pharmaceuticals had already destroyed evidence concerning Actos complications. Allegedly, 46 Takeda employees, both current and former, had important paperwork “go missing.”
John’s lawyer in the Actos bladder cancer lawsuit summarized it as, “It wasn’t an accident. The dog did not eat the homework.”
Actos Bladder Cancer Dangers
Studies have suggested that Actos may increase an individual’s chance of developing bladder cancer by up to 40 percent. Many who have taken this drug intending to treat their type-2 diabetes have instead developed a potentially deadly cancer.
The risk of developing Actos bladder cancer is the strongest after you have taken the drug for more than a year.
Symptoms of Actos bladder cancer may include painful or frequent urination, urinary tract infection, or blood in your urine.
Thousands of individuals have successfully filed Actos bladder cancer lawsuits against Takeda Pharmaceuticals. The Japanese drug manufacturer has appealed many of the verdicts ordering the company to pay millions of dollars to alleged victims of Actos side effects.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals was ordered to pay John over $2.3 million in damages. John had to pay over $300,000 for medical bills alone, and experienced the pain and suffering (both physical and mental) that comes with a bladder cancer diagnosis.
