lipitor-sign-diabetesA Tennessee woman filed a Lipitor diabetes lawsuit alleging the drug caused her to develop type-2 diabetes. This is one of many Lipitor type-2 lawsuits that has been consolidated into a  multidistrict litigation filed in South Carolina.

Plaintiff Deborah M., who filed the Lipitor lawsuit along with her husband, took the cholesterol medication from September 2008 until April 2012. She was diagnosed with Lipitor type-2 diabetes in 2011, according to the lawsuit.

Many plaintiffs, including Deborah, may not have originally been aware that their type-2 diabetes was caused by Lipitor. Pfizer is accused of failing to warn against this Lipitor side effect, according to Lipitor diabetes lawsuits.

Other claims made throughout the Lipitor MDL include negligence, negligent misrepresentation, negligent design, design defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, fraud and misrepresentation, constructive fraud, and unjust enrichment.

About Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes

Type-2 diabetes is a condition that can be managed through medication, exercise, diet change, and other lifestyle changes but will remain with the patient for the remainder of their lives.

A 2012 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that statin drugs like Lipitor may increase the risk of women developing type-2 diabetes by nearly 50 percent. This high risk caused the FDA to force Pfizer to change the warning label to include the risk of Lipitor type-2 diabetes in 2012. However, this change was made after Pfizer allegedly already knew that their drug could cause the condition.

Following the label change, many Lipitor lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer for failing to warn against type-2 diabetes.

This Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes Lawsuit is Case No. 2:15-cv-02172, consolidated with In Re: Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation MDL No. 2:14-mn-02502, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.
