The possible link between the herbicide glyphosate and cancer is of significant concern to users of the popular weedkiller Roundup, which contains glyphosate as its main ingredient.
A recent Roundup class action lawsuit was filed against Monsanto and Scotts Miracle-Gro, the manufacturer and marketer of Roundup, respectively. The complaint, filed by six consumers from all over the country in June 2017, alleges that Monsanto and Scotts Miracle-Gro marketed Roundup with the “false statement that Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, targets an enzyme that is not found ‘in people or pets.’” Indeed, the plaintiffs claim, glyphosate can cause serious damage to a person or pet’s immune system by targeting an enzyme in their gut bacteria.
The lawsuit alleges that Monsanto’s insistence that Roundup will not affect their immune system is deceptive and can have real, negative effects on the health of Roundup users. As a result, these plaintiffs filed their Monsanto lawsuit in the hopes of finding relief for the general public, asking that Monsanto’s Roundup profits in D.C. be donated to a charity fund to raise awareness of the effects of glyphosate, including the link between glyphosate and cancer.
The plaintiffs also seek compensation on behalf of themselves and other Roundup users for the money they spent on Roundup products that, had they known of its side effects, they would not have purchased.
Monsanto has long claimed that Roundup is not harmful at all to people or pets, despite mounting evidence of a link between glyphosate and cancer. New studies indicate the possibility that glyphosate is carcinogenic, and capable of damaging vital systems in both human and animals, including the cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has found a link between glyphosate and cancer, and now considers glyphosate to be a probable human carcinogen.
Roundup’s Glyphosate and Cancer Link
A number of farm workers and home gardeners have filed lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of Roundup cancer, claiming that they were diagnosed with one of several kinds of cancer after using Roundup. This was not the first study of the kind—other studies had already been published in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden that indicated a Roundup cancer link, since as far back as 2001. The Environmental Protection Agency had even begun to suspect a Roundup cancer connection since the 1980s.
A report published in March 2015 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) conclude that glyphosate is linked with cancer.
Types of Roundup Cancer
The link between glyphosate and cancer could possibly lead to the following conditions:
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other Cancers
Other side effects of glyphosate usage include skin tumors, pancreatic islet cell tumors, chromosomal damage, and DNA damage.
Filing a Lawsuit Over Glyphosate and Cancer
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed cancer after using Roundup, especially over an extended period of time as a home gardener or farmer, you may be able to file a Roundup cancer lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by glyphosate and cancer, it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
