LG warranty class action overview:
- Who: Two California consumers filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics USA Inc.
- Why: The plaintiffs allege LG violated California law by starting warranties on the date of purchase and not the date of delivery.
- Where: The LG warranty class action was filed in California federal court.
Two California consumers claim in a class action lawsuit that LG Electronics violated state law by starting its warranties on the date of purchase and not the date of delivery.
Plaintiffs Peter Abrego and Virginia Shamel filed the class action lawsuit against LG Electronics on May 14 in California federal court, alleging violations of California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and Unfair Competition Law.
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act explicitly states that manufacturers, distributors or retailers cannot make an express warranty that starts earlier than a product’s delivery date, the plaintiffs explain.
However, they allege LG “commences their express warranties on the date of purchase, not on the date of delivery.”
LG warranty benefits company at expense of consumers, class action alleges
The plaintiffs claim that consumers who receive their products after the date of purchase, such as online shoppers, are “short-changed the full value of their warranties.”
Meanwhile, LG unfairly benefits by saving itself the “added time and expense that would be required to properly track and administer their warranties were they to commence on the date of delivery,” the plaintiffs allege.
Abrego and Shamel seek to represent a class of California consumers who bought at least one LG product since July 1, 2023, and whose products were delivered to them after the date of purchase.
The plaintiffs assert LG’s alleged conduct constituted unfair business practices and that the company “intentionally designed” the warranties in violation of the law.
“This reduced the usable length of consumers’ warranties and forced consumers to unknowingly pay more for products,” the plaintiffs say, adding that such actions benefited LG to the detriment of consumers.
In other LG-related news, a class action filed in March alleges insufficient safety measures on certain ranges with front-mounted knobs, and a delayed recall resulted in numerous reported incidents, accidental fires, pet deaths and other damages.

Case 1: LG french door refrigerator’s compressor died within 5 years of ownership. It was under “warranty” but I still had to pay over $300 to get a new compressor installed. The new compressor died again within two years. I didn’t want to pay another $300 for another compressor took my losses and bought a different brand refrigerator.
Case 2: LG earbud failed to power up within three months after purchase. I filed a claim. Provided the receipt and was told it was not the right type of receipt. They could not process my claim with that type of receipt. I contacted their so-called President’s conflict resolution agent. She told me to resubmit the receipt, which I did, and that it was indeed the right receipt. She could not send me a refund or a replacement earbud and that it needs to be repaired by LG. She sent me a FedEx shipping label. Called FedEx for pick-up and they could not process the pick up so I brought it into my local FedEx center. They too could not process the shipment and said I would have to pay the shipping because the label was faulty. I contacted LG again, and they said there is nothing more they could do.
My LG plasma TV that I have owned for more than 20 years is still going strong. So are the 28 solar panels on my roof. But I will NEVER buy another LG product again. As a Korean, I am ashamed this Korean company dishonors our culture of civility and honesty.

My LG TV went out within the warranty time it was replaced with a new tv. The catch was there was to be no warranty offered on the new replacement tv and I could not purchase an extended warranty either. So I had to keep my fingers crossed that it didn’t break. I was able to pay a bit more for a more updated tv. So I put money in their pocket blindly hoping nothing went wrong.
I LOVE my LG TV. I’m disappointed by the warranty allegations. Please add me.
Why is this limited to California only or is it not?
LG is a disgusting organization that , as it’s normal business practices, makes products that fail quickly, require updates that violate basic freedom, products that become failed if ‘new terms’ are not agreed too and the list goes on. Please add me and please help take LG to the ground for their past present future and ongoing culture of deception.
