Over 15 lawsuits have been filed by consumers who accuse General Motors of concealing a deadly ignition switch defect that has been linked to as many as 300 deaths by the Center for Auto Safety. These concerns have also resulted in a class action lawsuit over the GM ignition switch recall, which consumers say came too late.
The GM Ignition Switch Defect
A problem with the circuitry in the ignition switch allows the key to accidentally move into the “off” or “accessory” position, causing the engine to switch off and the airbags to disengage. If that circumstance occurred, it could cause a crash, as the vehicle could suddenly lose power while driving. Additionally, the airbags might not deploy if the vehicle was involved in an accident.
More than 1.6 million GM vehicles are said to have this defect. Among the cars involved in the GM ignition switch recall are are the Pontiac G5, Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac Pursuit, Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Ion, and Saturn Sky.
GM Recall Lawsuits Grow
Class action lawsuits and wrongful death lawsuits against General Motors allege the company has been aware of the ignition switch defect since at least 2001, but failed to act on it, endangering lives. The legal action seeks to hold General Motors accountable for manufacturing and selling these vehicles, and allegedly endangering the lives of its customers.
Many of these GM recall lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation called In re General Motors LLC Ignition Switch Litigation, MDL No. 2543, U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (Washington).
