An Arizona man is suing Pfizer manufacturing and marketing allegedly unsafe low-t products including Depo-Testosterone (Pfizer), Delatestryl (Endo Pharmaceuitcals, Inc). and generic testosterone cypionate (Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Actavis, Inc., West-Ward Pharaceutical Corp. and John Doe).
Plaintiff Kent O., a 66-year-old Arizona resident, was prescribed the low-t drug enanthate and used the testosterone product between July 2009 and October 2012. In October 2012, he was prescribed testosterone cypionate and received testosterone injections from his physician every few weeks.
A couple weeks after he was using both low-t products together, Kent suffered multiple injuries and damages, including a stroke that required him to hospitalized.
The low-t drug lawsuit alleges that the defendants aggressively marketed their testosterone products to both the consumer and to physicians, and engaged in “disease awareness campaigns,” alerting men that they may be suffering from low testosterone.
Following the marketing and disease awareness campaigns, the testosterone product lawsuit claims that diagnoses of low testosterone, or “Low-T,” have skyrocketed.
Kent brings forth eight counts against the defendants including three counts of strict product liability, negligence, breaches of implied and express warranty, fraud, and negligent misrepresentation. He also seeks an award of exemplary and punitive damages against the defendants.
A study published in 2013 in the Journal of the American Medical Association called “Trends in Androgen Prescribing in the United States, 2001-2011” found that many men who are prescribed low-t products actually have no evidence of suffering from hypogonadism. The study explained that twenty-five percent of men did not even have their testosterone levels checked before their physician prescribed the medication.
As a result of the desired judgment entered against the defendants, Kent is seeking past and future general damages, economic and special damages, pain and suffering damages, past and future medical expenses and any other relief deemed fair by the Court.
Low-T Drug Side Effects
Hypogonadism is a condition of the sex glands that may lead to low levels of testosterone. After the age of thirty, men’s testosterone levels naturally begin to decline. Men start to see a lessening in sexual function, reduced bone and muscle mass, fatigue, mood issues and low energy.
To help improve low testosterone, supplemental testosterone is given. Testosterone therapy, also known as Low-T therapy provides, additional testosterone to assist in normalizing levels for optimal function. Testosterone can be delivered through pill, injections, cream, gel, implants under the skin or a patch.
While some men may benefit from this low-t therapy with minimal to no side effects, other men are not so lucky. Some men end up suffering more from the low-t drug side effects than they did from the original therapy.
Common side effects of testosterone therapy include:
- Increased aggression
- Mood instability
- Fluid retention
- Testicle shrinkage
- Male breast enlargement
- Increased urination due to stimulation of prostate tissue
- Acne, oily skin, or other skin changes
Severe side effects and complications may also occur. These life-altering events requiring hospitalization and potentially causing permanent damage include:
- Stroke, mini-stroke and blood clots
- Pulmonary embolism, caused by a blood clot in the lung.
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower extremities, often leading to pulmonary embolism.
