biomet-hip-lawsuitA Las Vegas woman claims that the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant is defective and that the manufacturer failed to disclose the risks of serious complications due to excessive metal-on-metal wear which violates Nevada consumer protection laws.

Plaintiff Gloria P. filed this metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuit against Biomet, alleging that she sustained severe hip replacement injuries as a direct result of Biomet’s defective manufacturing and marketing of the M2a Magnum hip implant.

Gloria received the Biomet hip implant in April 2008 during a right total hip replacement surgery. Gloria claims after the surgery that she suffered severe pain and had to undergo costly and painful premature hip revision surgery in March 2015 to replace the metal hip implant for her right hip. During the revision surgery, Gloria’s surgeon allegedly noted “metallosis, corrosion, metal staining, and elevated levels of cobalt and chromium ions”.

The hip lawsuit further claims that Biomet purposefully and recklessly failed to exercise reasonable care in warning patients and the medical community as to the risk of premature failure of the M2a Magnum hip implant device.

Gloria is seeking judgment for punitive and exemplary damages, pain and suffering, loss of earnings, medical expenses, attorney’s fees and court costs.

Biomet Hip Implant Complications

The Biomet M2a Magnum Hip is a metal-on-metal hip replacement system that has been implanted in patients throughout the United States. Although it was promoted for active and younger patients, reported problems suggest that the artificial hip implant may be prone to fail within a few years of surgery.

While typical hip implants consist of components made of metal and plastic, the Biomet Magnum has three all-metal components: a metal femoral head, metal taper insert and metal acetabulum cup.

As the metal parts rub against each other, microscopic shavings of metal may be released into the hip joint, which could cause inflammation, loosening, and other problems associated with metal hip poisoning.

Potential signs of Biomet Magnum hip complications could include:

  • Unexplained hip pain
  • Swelling and soft tissue damage
  • Unexplained tumors
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Loosening of the hip implant
  • Additional hip revision surgery

An alarming number of individuals throughout the United States have reported experiencing problems with the Biomet hip replacement, often involving loosening, dislocation, and wear or failure of the implant due to the design of the device. Although the hip implant is expected to last more than 15 years, many individuals have required hip revision surgery within a few years to replace or correct problems with Biomet M2a Magnum hip implants.

Biomet Hip Implant Lawsuits

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Biomet claiming that its M2a Magnum hip implant caused serious injuries to patients as a result of a design defect. These hip implant lawsuits are seeking compensation on behalf of patients injured by the hip implants, which have been linked to metal toxicity and premature failure.

If you or a loved one have been implanted with a Biomet hip implant, you may be able to join in this growing litigation.

The Biomet Hip Implant Lawsuit is Case No. 3:15-cv-00547-RLM-CAN, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, South Bend Division.
