  • Why: The company initiated the recall due to potential contamination with hard plastic material.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States, specifically in Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Johnsonville LLC is recalling more than 22,000 pounds of its cheddar bratwurst due to possible contamination with hard plastic.

The recall was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on April 5, 2025.

The affected product is a 19-ounce sealed tray containing five pieces of “Johnsonville BRATS CHEDDAR Bratwurst” with the package code B9FOD, produced on February 5, 2025. The product bears the establishment number “Est. 1647” and was distributed to retail locations across several states, including Georgia and Wisconsin.

The issue came to light after Johnsonville received two consumer complaints about finding hard plastic in the bratwurst. “FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers,” the recall notice says.

The FSIS routinely checks the effectiveness of recalls to ensure that the products are removed from consumer access.

Johnsonville recall advises customers to discard or return affected bratwurst

The recall notice urges consumers not to eat the affected bratwurst and to either dispose of the product or return it to the retailer.

Johnsonville has provided contact information for consumers with questions about the recall. Amanda Fritsch, Consumer Relations Coordinator, can be reached at 888-556-2728 or via email at [email protected]

The company says it has not received any reports of illness or injury related to the recall so far. It is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In March 2024, Johnsonville parent company Salm Partners LLC issued a turkey sausage recall for 35,340 pounds of its turkey kielbasa sausage alleged to contain pieces of rubber.
