FCA US LLC has been hit with a class action lawsuit over an alleged manufacturing defect in certain Jeep Wrangler vehicles that damages the vehicles’ radiators, oil coolers and other components, causing the heater, defroster and air conditioning systems to fail.
According to plaintiffs Donna Mooradian and William Mooradian, Chrysler manufactures engine component parts by using expendable sand molds to form metal parts from alloys, a process called the sand-casting method.
The alleged radiator defect affects model year 2012 through 2017 Jeep Wrangler vehicles, the class action says. These vehicles have a Pentastar V-6 3.6-liter engine, which is reportedly made using a die-casting method instead of a sand-casting method. However, a sand-crafting method is used to make the cylinder head located on top of the engines.
The radiator defect allegedly occurs because Chrysler fails to sufficiently purge casting sand from the cylinder head during the manufacturing process. This excess sand gradually “seeps out” and causes the Jeep Wranglers’ radiators and oil coolers to “fill with a sludge-like residue that damages and ultimately destroys these and other components,” according to the Jeep Wrangler class action lawsuit.
“Plaintiffs and the Class do not learn of the existence of the Manufacturing Defect until the heating and cooling systems fail even though the sand starts to shed from the cylinder head and collect in the radiator immediately after the vehicle is driven,” the Jeep Wrangler class action lawsuit says.
When heating and cooling systems fail, the vehicle’s safety is compromised, the plaintiffs say. For example, drivers cannot defrost their vehicles, making it unsafe to drive in certain cold-weather conditions.
The plaintiffs assert Chrysler should have known about the manufacturing defect because pre-sale testing of the vehicles would have detected the issue by 2011. Further, hundreds of consumer complaints were lodged against Chrysler over this alleged manufacturing defect, so Chrysler should have been aware of the issue by June 2012.
However, Chrysler failed to disclose the radiator defect to consumers who had purchased the affected vehicles and continued to sell vehicles that allegedly contained the defect. Further, Chrysler refuses to cover the costs of labor and repair for the manufacturing defect during the warranty period, claiming instead that the problem was caused by owner misuse or external factors, the Jeep Wrangler class action lawsuit alleges.
The plaintiffs claim they leased a new 2013 Jeep Wrangler in 2013. After a few years, they noticed the heater and defroster emitted only cool air. When they took the vehicle in to a dealer, they were told that the radiator, oil cooler and heater core would need to be replaced, and that the repair was not covered under warranty.
The Jeep Wrangler class action lawsuit brings claims against FCA US LLC for breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranties, breach of the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, and breach of the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act.

I have a 2015 Sahara JKU with 188,000 miles on it. Thankfully I bought the Lifetime Bumper to Bumper Warranty, it covers everything but normal wear and tear. 2015 was the last year Chrysler offered this warranty and now I see why. Other than the engine, (fingers crossed I am not jinxing myself) my jeep has almost been completely rebuilt, some parts twice. The part that puts my panties in a twist, is the fact that the work has to be done at a Chrysler dealership, by Chrysler mechanics, which we all know means double to triple the cost. Yet, when their mechanic screws up, they won’t back their mechanic. Like when the dealership gives you your vehicle back with loose lug nuts and you nearly crash because your tire almost falls off in 8 lanes of rush hour traffic on a Friday evening and you have to contact them to come get you because all your lug nuts are gone and your blocking traffic and they act like its no big deal, it happens all the time and proceed to tell you it will not cause future damage. Well I have been telling the dealerships for over 8 months that something was wrong with the vents blowing cold air, the engine running high a coolant smell and it overheating. I have had a burning smell from day one through the vents when I accelerate quickly. Was told that would burn off, it hasn’t. Dealership just kept saying they couldn’t duplicate the issue (standard response). Now I am being told its the heating core and Chrysler doesn’t want to cover it. They are getting so frustrating and expensive to deal with I almost want to sell the Jeep and buy something not Chrysler related altogether. If there are any future class action suits, I want in, They need to be help accountable.
Yep. 2012 jeep wrangler… no radiator replacement…yet. heater core, thermostat, water pump, head gasket, had the back flush done, axle seals, and just after the 2yr mark of parts and service warranty- the engine code for thermostat regulation came on again which lead to the failure of the systems the first time around… I have multiple cylinders misfiring as we speak…the thermostat code- my RADIO doesn’t work either… cat converters and 02 sensors also needed replacing… SOMEONE HELP US!!!!

oil cooler assemly 87642 miles $891, plugs/coils 90524 $1179, thermostat 99647 miles $225, front/rear axle seals, bearings, mail seal 101285 miles $2858, radiator 105987 $1313, heater core 106497 $1607, front rear shocks 108338 $720, rockers/valve gaskets 125234 $539, cam sensor 7/2023 , cam sensor 2nd 8/2023, radiator again (leaking coolant) 135857 $572. as you see the amount of money i have put into the system since jan 2021 . i purchased this vehicle brand new in 2015 and i dirive it daily to work its not used for off roading . very frustrating.
I’m right there behind you. My lifters are so bad it sounds like a diesel. Those started right after my warranty ended! I’m on my second radiator in less than a year. My heat has been going in and out for about 4 years. I have to constantly do back flushes to the heater core to get the crap out of there. Bought it brand new In 2015. I’m about ready to drive it off the cliff and say peace out!
