The popular blood thinning drug, Eliquis, has been the subject of numerous lawsuits since its approval and many have sought the help of an Eliquis attorney as a result of complications they experienced while taking the drug.
Eliquis (apixaban), first introduced in 2012 by Pfizer and Bristol-Meyers Squibb to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation and to prevent blood clots in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery, does not currently have an antidote for uncontrollable bleeding events.
As is expected with blood thinning medications, there is a possibility of the anticoagulant thinning the blood so much that a patient may experience a hemorrhage.
Earlier medications such as warfarin have had treatments available for such an incident.
However, Eliquis and the other members of its drug class such as Xarelto, have not had an antidote treatment available.
This puts Eliquis patients at high risk for uncontrollable bleeding events.
Because of this, many have sought the help of an Eliquis attorney to file lawsuits against Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer.
Lawsuits report that the major study used to prove the Eliquis’ safety and efficacy and conducted in China was flawed. Plaintiffs cite the following flaws in the study:
- Inaccurate and missing data
- Patients receiving incorrect medication
- Patients receiving incorrect doses of medication
- Failure to report adverse events including deaths
One such lawsuit, filed by a New York couple in 2014, claims that Eliquis was responsible for the husband’s gastrointestinal hemorrhage and subsequent death. According to this lawsuit, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer used incompetent researchers in the China study for the reason of cutting costs.
The wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of her deceased husband.
Contacting an Eliquis Attorney
There are many reasons a patient should contact an Eliquis attorney. These include:
- Fraud: Manufacturers allegedly conducted a clinical trial in a fraudulent manner and concealed the side effects of Eliquis.
- Failure to warn: Manufacturers allegedly failed to warn about the risks associated with Eliquis including the fact that it has no antidote.
- False claims: Manufacturers allegedly misrepresented the drug’s safety in marketing and promotional campaigns.
- Negligence: Manufacturers allegedly were negligent in their design, research, manufacturing and marketing of Eliquis.
- Compensation: If someone or someone’s loved one claims to be harmed by Eliquis, they should seek compensation for pain, suffering, emotional distress, medical expenses and lost earnings.
Eliquis lawsuits are being filed now by patients across the country who have allegedly been injured by the drug. Eliquis wrongful death lawsuits are also being filed by family members of patients who died of Eliquis side effects.
