many tablets with a glasbeghäter. symbolic photo for addiction and costs in medicine and medicines.A Tennessee resident has filed a new lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, alleging he suffered from serious Invokana side effects, including Invokana kidney damage.

The plaintiff, Christopher B., began taking Invokana at the direction of his doctor on Oct. 12, 2015 in order to improve glycemic control in the process of treating his diabetes. Christopher continued taking Invokana until Jan. 21, 2016, when he was hospitalized allegedly due to serious Invokana side effects.

According to the lawsuit, Christopher developed diabetic ketoacidosis and kidney failure as a direct result of his treatment with Invokana. He was hospitalized for multiple days. These Invokana side effects caused not only pain and suffering but also emotional distress and significant economic losses, from lost wages as well as medical expenses, the lawsuit states.

In his lawsuit, Christopher claims that Janssen either knew or should have known that its Invokana medicine had the potential to cause these injuries, and furthermore that it had a responsibility to warn patients and the medical community about this risk, yet failed to do so. Had Christopher been adequately warned about the potential Invokana side effects linked with the Janssen medication, including Invokana kidney damage, he would have chosen a safer alternative, the lawsuit alleges.

Christopher filed his Invokana side effects lawsuit on Jan. 3, 2018 in the U.S District Court for the District of New Jersey. The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation, and fraud, among several others.

This lawsuit joins many other lawsuits filed over Invokana side effects to be consolidated into an MDL, or multidistrict litigation.

Basics of Invokana

Invokana (also known by its generic name, canagliflozin) is a fairly new medication, first brought onto the drug market in 2013 to treat diabetes. Janssen, a prominent subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, is the drug’s manufacturer.

Invokana is one of several major diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. SGLT2 inhibitors like Invokana are becoming increasingly popular.

Despite the growing use of new diabetes drugs like Invokana, the popular medication has been linked with some serious Invokana side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received adverse event reports regarding Invokana side effects. Recently, the agency required that Janssen to add a series of warnings to the Invokana label about these risks.

Invokana Side Effects

Invokana and other diabetes drugs have been connected with a number of dangerous complications, from heart attack to Invokana kidney damage.

The popular diabetes drug is associated with a number of Invokana side effects, including, but not limited to:

  • Dehydration (dizziness, lightheadedness)
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Yeast infection of the penis
  • Low blood sugar
  • Serious allergic reaction
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Kidney damage
  • Kidney failure

Filing a Lawsuit Over Invokana Side Effects

Invokana lawsuits claim that the drug’s manufacturer failed to adequately warn about Invokana side effects. If you or someone you love has suffered due to severe Invokana side effects like kidney damage, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, pursuing a lawsuit can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.

The Invokana Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 3:18-cv-00060-BRM-LHG, in the U.S. District Court for the Trenton Division of the District of New Jersey.

In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
