A patient prescribed a diabetes medication that he thought would help him ultimately experienced side effects and filed an Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit. He and other Invokana patients have come forward with claims of diabetic ketoacidosis and say that they were never warned about the substantial risk of this side effect.
Invokana is an SGLT-2 inhibitor that inhibits glucose reabsorption in a patient. This medication is currently approved for use with patients who have type-2 diabetes for the purpose of improving their glycemic control.
Unfortunately, however, as alleged in the Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit, some patients may face a risk of severe side effects that could cause additional pain and medical problems. Diabetic ketoacidosis, for example, may develop after patients have used Invokana for a certain period of time after receiving a prescription from their doctor.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Chief among this Invokana lawsuit and other complaints is the development of diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition explains what happens when a person’s body turns to burn fat primarily rather than glucose. When the fats are broken down, ketones are put into person’s bloodstream. These ketones are extremely acidic.
The body typically disposes of excess ketones through a person’s urine. Anything causing a person’s blood to become too acidic can be dangerous to the patient and could cause dangerous side effects.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is usually tied to the presence of two side effects: frequent urination and high glucose levels. If not caught early, this condition could threaten the life of the affected patient.
As with other similar lawsuits and claims from patients who have developed this condition, the allegations include that the manufacturers did not properly protect patients by warning them about the risks or side effects of their medication. This put patients in danger of a life-threatening complication.
A patient not told to be aware of specific signs and symptoms may have ignored them or avoided getting medical attention; health problems could have developed as a result.
Invokana Side Effects
A few different and severe side effects have been reported by patients as well as by the FDA. In 2015, the FDA shared that Invokana may lead to premature bone loss and fractures. Later that same year, the FDA also announced that Invokana may cause diabetic ketoacidosis. In 2016, the FDA shared that renal impairment may be experienced by patients using this medication.
An Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit may be filed by any patient who developed this medical problem and has had to cope with the pain and other side effects because of it.
The Invokana ketoacidosis lawsuit says that the defendants misrepresented that Invokana was a safe or effective treatment for type-2 diabetes. Serious Invokana side effects such as diabetic ketoacidosis can lead to hospitalization or other health complications. The ketoacidosis lawsuit claims that the manufacturers knew about these risks and failed to warn the medical community and the public at large or did not conduct the appropriate testing and efficacy evaluations to identify the risk to patients.
The Invokana Ketoacidosis Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-CV-01677-BRM-LHG filed in the United States District Court of New Jersey.
In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
