low t class action lawsuitMore people have been thinking about testosterone replacement drugs of late. First, more and more people became aware of a potential health concern called “low T.” Then these drugs became the subject of scrutiny as patients taking them have allegedly suffered a higher risk of stroke. However, drug makers have alleged that injectable low T drugs are different, and shouldn’t be included in testosterone lawsuits with the more common gels and creams.

As males age, their bodies produces lower levels of male hormones or androgens. This includes testosterone. This decreasing level of androgens may produce a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, irritability, decreased libido, and other problems. This decreasing level of androgens has been termed “low T,” or low testosterone. Drug manufacturers have promoted various products to combat this disorder.

However, concerns have emerged about low T treatments. Among them is stroke, a medical emergency in which a blood clot forms within the body and lodges in the blood vessel that supplies the brain. This can cause serious damage, and disrupt various critical brain functions. This can cause a variety of serious health problems, including paralysis, problems speaking, blindness, and even death.

Testosterone drug lawsuits over alleged low-T complications are taking the form of a multidistrict litigation, or MDL. MDLs are a type of group lawsuit similar to class action lawsuits in some ways. In both MDLs and class action lawsuits groups of people allege that they have suffered from similar harm at the hands of the same defendant. While some class action lawsuits and MDLs name a single defendant, the current MDL against the makers of low T drugs have combined low testosterone drug lawsuits against several companies. One company, Pfizer, alleges that its drugs are distinct enough to warrant separate legal action.

Though Pfizer makes testosterone-based drugs, its product is injectable and was not advertised on television. All of the other low T drugs in the proposed MDL are gels or creams. Pfizer’s low T drugs are designed to be injected under a physician’s direct supervision. Additionally, one issue in the pending MDL is that some companies may have over-promoted low T drugs. In fact, a sizable minority of patients on low T treatments never had their testosterone levels tested. Pfizer alleges that theses are critical issues that set its drug apart.

However, the other defendants in the proposed MDL have supported the idea of combining the low testosterone drug lawsuits. AbbVie has a major horse in the race. Its drug, a gel-based treatment called Androgel, is at the heart 60 percent of the low testoterone drug lawsuits. AbbVie has supported the decision to combine all of the low T testosterone lawsuits into a single MDL.
