Hooters Employees Sue Over Uniforms, Tips and Wage Violations

By Sarah Pierce

Three dozen current and former Hooters workers are crying “fowl” over alleged work violations, saying they were forced to buy their own uniforms, share tip money with managers, and work without pay.

Two lawsuits seeking class action status were filed last week in Sacramento and Los Angeles, following a lawsuit filed last year in San Francisco. According to the lawsuits, the chicken-wing franchise violated several labor codes, including having walkouts deducted from staff pay checks, not granting required breaks and meal periods, and having staff time records altered. Other complaints in the suit include managers skimming money from staff tips and staff being forced to work off the clock.

An attorney for the plaintiffs says the employees are seeking millions in reimbursement and penalties.
