A federal class action lawsuit claims the front brake pads in 2008-2010 Honda Civics wear out prematurely, often in less than 15,000 miles, yet Honda won’t repair them under warranty.
According to the Honda Civic brake pad class action lawsuit, “The braking system installed in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Model Year Honda Civic Vehicles (‘Class Vehicles’) suffers from one or more design and/or manufacturing defects that causes the Class Vehicles’ front brake pads to wear out prematurely, and require replacement approximately every 7,500 to 15,000 miles, far more frequently than in a properly functioning braking system. Although defects in material, manufacturing and workmanship are covered by Honda’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty, Honda has failed to repair the Brake Defect under warranty.”
The Civic brake pad class action lawsuit goes on to say that Honda knows about the Brake Defect and knows that consumers do not anticipate having to inspect or replace their Civic’s front brake pads every 7,500 to 15,000 miles, yet Honda continues to not inform current owners and lessees about the Civic Brake Defect, and has not disclosed the Brake Defect to purchasers and lessors of 2008-2010 Civics.
This not only poses a safety hazard to consumers, but also forces them to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to prematurely replace the brake pads, rotors, calipers and other brake related components as a result of the Civic Brake Defect, the Honda Civic class action lawsuit states.
“Honda knew and concealed the Brake Defect that is contained in every Class Vehicles, along with the attendant dangerous safety problems and associated repair costs, from Plaintiffs and Class Members both at the time of sale and repair and thereafter,” the class action lawsuit states. “Had Plaintiffs and Class Members known about these defects at the time of sale or lease, [they] would not have purchased the Class Vehicle or would have paid less for them.”
The Honda Civic class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all current and former owners or lessees of a 2008, 2009 or 2010 Model Year Honda Civic vehicle. It is seeking class certification, damages and restitution for Class Members for violations of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, violations of the Unfair Business Practices Act, and breach of warranty under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

in 03/11, i purchased a 2010 honda civic sedan, and had the car serviced regularly with oil changes. in june 2014, i had to have front brake pads, resurface front rotors, lubed caliper pin, and was test drove at mileage 18,925. now, july 22, 2014, the car paint is coming at the top of the rear back window, with two grey areas. i have the 800 phone nimber of honda, so we will keep you informed. lastly, the passenger sun visor is malfunctioning, cannot be placed in a permanent position up to the front windsheild nor close to the car roof. three honda problems on a three year old car.
I am having the same issue. Honda Civic 2010 and as of today I am on my 4th set of pads. I’ve also had to replace the rotors. I am a single mom and thought that by purchasing a Honda I would be saving money, little did I know…. Honda is such a dissapointment, I’d never buy another one after this car. Who do I contact for the lawsuit? If someone could send me the info that would be great!
Purchased a 2013 brand new civic, 12 miles about 8 months ago for my teen. I just received a letter suggesting I come in and replace the breaks, really?! I THOUGHT I was buying her a reliable car! she nor I can afford frequent car issues this is why i bought her brand new, cash… I HATE HONDA NOW! bad choice. I also own a 2008 Avalanche and still have the original breaks on.
I have a 2009 honda civic with 70,000 miles on it. I am now on my third set of calipers. I was also in a serious accident in 2012 because my brakes did not respond appropriately. I am extremely disappointed in Honda and very worried. Please let me know how of who I should contact.
I have a 2010 Honda Civic and have the same problem with the brake pads. Please let me know how or who should I contact. Thank you
I too experience this with my 2006 then my 2011 Honda civic, I find it very odd that my ford truck( bought in 2009) has brakes that are untouched by a mechanic , I thought they would correct this problem but my 2011 still has the same brake problems as the 2006 .Any lawsuit with 2011 count me in.
At 59K miles ave replace 3 time. Can’t stop the rattle and clicking. Got genuine Honda pads last time and worse than from Auto Zone’s.
I own an 09 lx and after only 40k miles I’m already on my 3rd pair of brakes. Not only do they wear out quickly but the braking is just awful. It always feels like you’re only about an inch away from slamming on the brakes just to stop the car normally. You never feel confident or safe trying to bring the car to a stop under normal conditions, let alone in an emergency.
I have a 2008 and 2009 Honda Civic and the brakes are bad on both. I have replaced the brakes and rooters and my brakes still grind. I hate my Honda!
2010 Honda Civic LX, bought brand new, the car now has 63K miles, replaced front brake pads three times now, almost every 20K miles. I never expected this from a Honda. I have even replaced my AC compressor due to leakage and it cost me $600. The brakes have now cost me about $550-$600 :( Please include me in this lawsuit.
