UHaier freezer settlementPDATE: Details on how to file a claim for the Haier Freezer Class Action Lawsuit Settlement are up!

Haier America Trading LLC has agreed to a $3 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve allegations it sold power-draining freezers that consume nearly twice the amount of energy allowed under federal standards.

The Haier freezer settlement will resolve a 2011 class action lawsuit (Christopher Collins, et al. v. Haier America Trading LLC, et al.) that accuses Haier of illegally selling freezers that don’t meet the energy consumption standards set by the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Haier intentionally mislabeled these freezers as compliant with these standards, despite the fact that they were far less efficient and spiked consumers’ electric bills.

Haier does not admit any wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement, but agreed to pay $3 million to resolve the claims and end the litigation.

Under the proposed class action settlement, consumers who purchased Haier’s HNCM070E freezer will receive between $50 and $325 for each freezer purchased, depending on the number of valid claims filed.

The case is Christopher Collins, et al. v. Haier America Trading LLC, et al., Case No.11-cv-02911, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The plaintiffs are represented by L Timothy Fisher, Sarah Westcot and Scott Bursor of Bursor & Fisher PA.
