A GM power steering recall was initiated in 2014 by General Motors(GM) after the company had attempted to handle issues internally with car models whose steering system suddenly became difficult.
The auto-making giant, aware of the problem with some of its models experiencing unexpected shutdown of power steering systems, had contacted dealers and revealed how to fix the issue at hand. The company requested that this only be done if a customer made an inquiry.
When this backdoor attempt at fixing the problem failed, the GM power steering recall was put into action and initially covered 1.3 million cars and trucks. In the winter of 2015, a year later, the Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Max, as well as the Pontiac G6, were added to the recall list after a complaint from Transport Canada, the country’s highway and transportation oversight agency.
The addition of these three models from the years 2006 and 2007 added approximately 81,000 more vehicles to the original GM power steering recall. While most of the cars and trucks are in circulation in the U.S., at least 11,000 are in Mexico and Canada.
The GM power steering recall is not the only problem belaboring GM vehicles in the modern marketplace. Also initiated by GM in 2014 is the ignition switch defect recall. This recall was because of a defect with ignition switches that caused them to turn from the on to the off position very easily while certain vehicles were in motion, bringing the engine to a dead standstill.
The problem was frequently and easily instigated by a bump with a driver’s knee or contact with a heavy key chain. This issue was allegedly associated with 100 deaths. Supposedly, the company knew of the ignition switch sensitivity, but didn’t alert or warn customers until 2014, a full 13 years after first being made aware.
In addition to the GM power steering recall and the GM ignition switch recall in 2014, there was also a 2014 recall filed by the auto-maker concerning a side-impact airbag defect. This defect prevented side-impact airbags from deploying in serious collisions.
Allegedly, a wiring harness would get pinched off and the airbags would not inflate as needed. It affected 1.2 million GM vehicles. Among them were 2008-2013 Buick Enclaves and GMC Acadias, 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverses, and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlooks.
Finally, in the fall of 2016, GM recalled 4.3 million vehicles due to reported problems with front-impact airbag software failure. Although the problem only affected cars made in the last three years, it is potentially a very deadly defect in that the failure of frontal airbags to deploy could mean the difference between life and death.
