Update:

  • General Motors must face class action claims that certain transmissions in its vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions.
  • On Aug. 28, a 6th Circuit panel rejected GM’s motion to dismiss the claims, saying it found no reason to undo class certification for the drivers.
  • The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or delay acceleration.
  • They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies.

(April 25, 2024)

A group of 13 consumers claims certain transmissions in General Motors vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions, according to a new GM transmission class action.

The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or have delayed acceleration.

They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies. This, the class action argues, is the cause of the shudder, lurching and delayed acceleration, as well as overall poor shift quality.

GM class action: Automaker elected not to recall, replace defective transmissions

The GM transmission issues happen around the time the affected vehicles’ warranties run out, the class action claims. The plaintiffs allege that GM covers fluid flushes for customers who complain about their transmissions during the warranty period, without fixing the underlying issues.

GM engineers asked the company to fix the transmission issues for $305 a vehicle, which would have cost GM about $592 million, according to the lawsuit.

GM instead only replaced the defective transmission in 6,518 unsold Cadillacs and trucks in certain states where it expected customers to complain within warranty, the GM class action claims.

Six drivers filed a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging that several vehicles manufactured by GM are equipped with defective eight-speed transmissions and that GM concealed the defects from buyers for years.

  1. Brandy says:

I currently have a 2018 suburban that is doing everything claimed in the lawsuit
I was told the Chevy put out a TSB even though they knew the fluid was incorrect and would cause the transmission to prematurely wear. The dealership wants $10,000 to replace my transmission

    1. Jenny Lu says:

  2. Sherry says:

I own a 2015 Yukon Denali XL And it has the 8L90 transmission. It has been lagging when switching gears and has a lugging feeling at times. It makes sense because this has been going on for Over five years.

  5. William Van Nuys says:

I have 2016 Silverado Z71 with the 8 speed transmission. I have had it in for transmission shutter 3 times. At around 30,000 , 55,000 , & it is in right now with 96,000 miles. It also has shifted hard from 1st to 2nd mostly in the morning when the transmission is cold ( not warmed up) . It clunks into 2nd. It also clunks into 2nd randomly while I am driving.

  6. Debra C says:

These issures occurred long before this time. I’ve had transmission issues from GM for 40 years. I will never buy another small car from GM. My 2012 Sonic, my 2006 Cobalt, and my 1983 Cavalier all had transmission problems that I had to pay to repair. The Sonic was the worst. It felt like it would fail every time it shifted. It shifted so hard that the car would jerk. My daughters thought I was stepping on the brake too hard when I hadn’t even touched the brake. I took it back to the Chevy dealer while under warranty and they found nothing.

  7. Danny Toliver says:

I had a 2018 Gmc Yukon and transmission either would jerk into gear or shut off while driving and I was informed by several dealerships within the Maryland area I had to deal the transmission issues because GM did not have a fix for the transmission problem. Please add me to the list.

  8. Perla Ortiz says:

I had s Gmc Denali Acadia 2012 and out of no where the transmission caught on fire while I was driving and they never paid me any money supposedly because it was wear and tear I didn’t believe any of it

  9. Christie Marie Camacho says:

Has there ever been a class action or recalls on the engine for the 2007 Chevy Silverado Z71 Crew Cab New Body Style?

  10. Robyn Kellie Nelson says:

Own 2018 chevy silverado ltz and it has had 3 transmissions and still has issues. We have almost been in accidents due to its failure.
