Update:

  • General Motors must face class action claims that certain transmissions in its vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions.
  • On Aug. 28, a 6th Circuit panel rejected GM’s motion to dismiss the claims, saying it found no reason to undo class certification for the drivers.
  • The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or delay acceleration.
  • They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies.

A group of 13 consumers claims certain transmissions in General Motors vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions, according to a new GM transmission class action.

The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or have delayed acceleration.

They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies. This, the class action argues, is the cause of the shudder, lurching and delayed acceleration, as well as overall poor shift quality.

GM class action: Automaker elected not to recall, replace defective transmissions

The GM transmission issues happen around the time the affected vehicles’ warranties run out, the class action claims. The plaintiffs allege that GM covers fluid flushes for customers who complain about their transmissions during the warranty period, without fixing the underlying issues.

GM engineers asked the company to fix the transmission issues for $305 a vehicle, which would have cost GM about $592 million, according to the lawsuit.

GM instead only replaced the defective transmission in 6,518 unsold Cadillacs and trucks in certain states where it expected customers to complain within warranty, the GM class action claims.

Six drivers filed a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging that several vehicles manufactured by GM are equipped with defective eight-speed transmissions and that GM concealed the defects from buyers for years.

  1. Crystal Chambers says:

I had to have my transmission replaced last year on my 2015 GMC YUKON DENALI XL. It was shifting really hard and it shudders when I go 60mph or faster. So disappointing and also my paint is peeling on the hood and roof. A Denali shouldn’t be falling apart like this. I’m pissed.

  2. Todd McKee says:

I have a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado RST with a 10 speed transmission. The vehicle has 7,800 miles on it. Received a reduced acceleration code and lost reverse. The vehicle was towed to a dealer on 8/28/24. I am still waiting for a diagnoses.

  3. David Doutt says:

I have a 2015 Silverado that the first transmission went out at 98,000 miles and it’s about to have its 4th transmission with roughly 165,000 miles on it. All towing within the recommended weight range.

  4. David Alheit says:

I have a 2021 chevy silverado LT and have similar issues with my truck

  5. Treshia Towner says:

I’ve had the same issues with my 2018 GMC Sierra Denali. I’ve taken it to the dealership 3 times and they’re saying it’s the torque converter each time. They were supposed to have fixed the torque converter, and it is still shuddering and shaking. I asked them to check the transmission, and they refuse.

  6. Diana says:

I had the same issue with my 2015 Impala and was told the transmission had to be replaced by 2 Chevrolet dealers so got rid of the car and following the car fax report the car transmission never was replaced therefore I feel like they stole my car because of what they gave me for a trade value.

  7. Quinton says:

I had the same issue with my 2021 Chevy RST. I had the transmission fixed for $6000

  8. James miller says:

Having the same issue with my 2019 silverado 1500 high country shifting hard out of first gear and shuttering

  9. Gilibaldo Delafuente says:

I’m having transmission issues with my 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali as well

  10. Karl says:

Same thing on my 2017 Silverado. Took it to the dealer told them what was happening and they still charged me for diagnostics. They changed transmission fluid and said it should be good now, well it isn’t because the transmission shrugs like it did before.
