Update:

  • General Motors must face class action claims that certain transmissions in its vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions.
  • On Aug. 28, a 6th Circuit panel rejected GM’s motion to dismiss the claims, saying it found no reason to undo class certification for the drivers.
  • The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or delay acceleration.
  • They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies.

A group of 13 consumers claims certain transmissions in General Motors vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions, according to a new GM transmission class action.

The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or have delayed acceleration.

They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies. This, the class action argues, is the cause of the shudder, lurching and delayed acceleration, as well as overall poor shift quality.

GM class action: Automaker elected not to recall, replace defective transmissions

The GM transmission issues happen around the time the affected vehicles’ warranties run out, the class action claims. The plaintiffs allege that GM covers fluid flushes for customers who complain about their transmissions during the warranty period, without fixing the underlying issues.

GM engineers asked the company to fix the transmission issues for $305 a vehicle, which would have cost GM about $592 million, according to the lawsuit.

GM instead only replaced the defective transmission in 6,518 unsold Cadillacs and trucks in certain states where it expected customers to complain within warranty, the GM class action claims.

Six drivers filed a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging that several vehicles manufactured by GM are equipped with defective eight-speed transmissions and that GM concealed the defects from buyers for years.

  1. Elizabeth D Sanderson says:

I purchased a 2016 Camaro SS brand new. I am female and was told after my first complaint in 2017 that the lag was normal. 2019 I returned to the dealer with a shudder at 75 mph. There was only 18,000 miles on it. The dealer said he had to drive it to make sure there was a shudder even though the state speed limit was 69, Idaho is 70. I demanded a triple flush with the correct fluid, paid for it and was told it should resolve. The service person did not want to do the service until my boyfriend walked up behind me. That issue has resolved however I had to replace #6 sparkplug that was coated with coolant. The service bullentin was in place which began wirh plug replacement, camera inspection and maybe replace the valve cover if not resolved. Chevy knew there was a problem and like the tranny blew it off. The car has only 24,000 miles on it.

2015 GMC Sierra SLT tranmission replacement cost me $5200. 2017 GMC Acadia Limited AWD transmission replacement cost me $4000

  3. Tommy Lewis says:

I have a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban. Have had a slue of Transmission problems with the shuttering and stalling. I have spent over $4000 in repairs to only have the same issues over and over. I love the truck, but the transmission should be an embarrassment for Chevrolet. I have been a die hard GM driver for 30 years, but the last (2) 2016 and 2018 Suburban transmission issues, i don’t think i will buy another.

  4. Chris Baker says:

Yesterday we had this problem repaired. $900 As soon as dealer heard our problem he immediately said what it was and said it was a known problem. Changed transmission fluid.

  5. Elizabeth Kehlenbrink says:

I had sudden lurching…engine light was on…tried to get warranty dept to check it out. They put it off long enough for me to get a check from my insurance. Then they said they couldn’t do anything since I got a check. Vehicle was totaled when it hit the curb. Very slow speed…a/c on.

  6. Shari Thakady says:

We have a 2018 Chevy Colorado that has just started the shuddering. It will cost $900 for the transmission flush and we are under the 60k mile warranty but over the 5 years. Does anyone know if a dealership will cover.

  7. Scott Clemens says:

I have the problematic siverado 8 speed, shudder and lurch and buzzing. I got the air conditioning defect also.

  8. Gage Merrell says:

2017 Colordo here. 66000km and same issue, off warranty and going to the dealer this week.

  9. Blaine Dahlin says:

I have a 2018 Chevy Camaro that is just out of warranty and had the shudder problem. I had to pay out of pocket to have the transmission flushed with the new Mobil 1 fluid that was mentioned in TSB# 18-NA-355. I would like to recoup my money back for my out of pocket expenses.

  10. Ronny Stroud says:

I have a 2019 GMC Sierra and just had the transmission flush that cost me $1000 because I was past the warranty by 7 days!
