GM recall overview:
- Who: General Motors recalled more than 130,000 Silverados and Sierras.
- Why: The tailgate can unlatch while the vehicle is in park.
- Where: The GM recall is active in the United States.
General Motors recalled more than 130,000 Silverados and Sierras as the vehicles have a defect that can cause the tailgate to unlatch while the vehicle is in park.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published the recall Nov. 26. It applies to 132,037 vehicles, including model year 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500s and 3500s and model year 2024 GMC Sierra HD 2500s and 3500s vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates.
According to the recall, the tailgate’s electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in park.
“An unlatched tailgate may open and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall states.
Owners should check vehicles before driving, recall states
Owners should check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving, the recall notice states.
To fix the issue, the automaker says its dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies free of charge, according to the automaker. It also says it expects to mail owner notification letters Jan. 13, 2025.
GM is also recalling tens of thousands of Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles over a software issue that can increase the risk of a crash.

This has happened to my tailgate 3x in the last year and a half. Took them long enough to issue a recall. Dealership had no idea why my trucks tailgate was doing this.
I have a gmc sierra 2500

If the tailgate unmatched while the pickup is in park but the driver remains in the vehicle (as in a drive through restaurant) and the driver doesn’t know then yes he could lose his cargo.
How is cargo going to fall out & create a road hazard & create a crash if the truck IS IN PARK? Pretty sure it’s not moving on the road then…

Trust from experience, the tailgate will pop open regardless of what gear it’s in, stopped, parked not running or driving down the road 70 mph. The one’s I have replaced had corroded solder joints were the wires are hooked to the backside of the switch. Generally the problem occurs during winter months and after it’s been wet ie washed or weather. Hard to comprehend in a cold climate state. Trouble is “in my opinion” the new switch doesn’t look any different than the old one unless it’s changed recently. Another thing I noticed just Friday the switch retailed for $26.39 Friday it retailed for $9. Funny how when you recall 200k trucks all of a sudden the cost of the part takes a nose dive. Oh by the way GM pays the dealership 80% for parts and labor. And you will never guess what comes next they are on backorder.
I am interested in receiving notices of possible cash I may be eligible to receive
